Easter feast. Easter is the second greatest holiday of Christianity. We commemorate Jesus Christ’s crucifixion and resurrection. It’s a moving feast. It is usually between 22 March and 25 April.

  1. Easter feast

  2. Easter is the second greatest holiday of Christianity. We commemorate Jesus Christ’s crucifixion and resurrection.

  3. It’s a moving feast. It is usually between 22 March and 25 April. According to the Council of Nicaea in 325 Easter Sunday is always the first Sunday after the first full moon after spring equinox.

  4. The feast begins with a 40-day Lent. Its first day is Ash Wednesday and the last one is Palm Sunday.

  5. On Ash Wednesday the priest draws a cross from the ashes of blessed catkin on the forehead of the believers

  6. During Lent it was prohibited to go to balls, have wedding ceremonies, or be loud. People wore dark simple clothes.

  7. Believers weren’t allowed to eat meat. A typical food of the period was a soup made from bran.

  8. Inspite of dance prohibition people played Lent games.

  9. These games were mainly played by children and young.

  10. Palm Sunday. The feast commemorates Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusalem.

  11. In Hungary the holly palm was replaced by catkin. It was used to cure illnesses and keep away lightning and thunder.

  12. Kisze walk was on Palm Sunday. Kisze is a straw puppet dressed into the clothes of a young girl.

  13. It was thrown into water or burnt at the edge of the village. The puppet was the symbol of winter and illness.

  14. Villő play started after Kisze walk. Girls walked along the village with a decorated willow branch and dropped in each house.

  15. Holy Week. On Maundy Thursday „bells went to Rome”, it meant every church stopped ringing.

  16. Children replaced bellring with a naughty sound made with this device and walked through the village.

  17. Good Friday. Commemorating the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and his death at Calvary. This is the period of the deepest Lent and mourning.

  18. To remember Jesus’ suffering people built a holy grave.

  19. Easter Eve. The most important event of the day was the Resurrection procession.

  20. Fire and water was blessed this day, too.

  21. Easter Sunday The Christian world celebrates Jesus’ Ressurection.

  22. An Easter tradition was food blessing. Catholics brought lamb, bacon, eggs, sweet bread and wine into church where the priest blessed them.

  24. Jesus search. Christ’s statue was hidden at the farthest cross and brought back to church.

  25. The aim of walking around the frontier was to clean the springs and to frighten the evil spirits.

  26. In Transdanubia people brought green branches around which symbolized renewal in spring.

  27. Easter Monday. Sprinkling is the well-known tradition of the day which was based on the belief of cleaning and fertility effect of water.

  28. One theme of the sprinkling poems was girls’ long hair.

  29. Another tradition at Easter Monday was birching. Girls were gently hit by a spinned birch.

  30. The present of the sprinklers and birchers were red eggs on Hungarian speaking territories for a long time.

  31. The next Sunday after Easter was called white Sunday. This is the final day of Easter period. A typical tradition of the day was making friendships.
