2. ENGLISH • English 7 offers a comprehensive study of the English language through reading, writing, speaking and listening. Each of the four components is stressed on a daily basis. • The reading list is constantly evolving, but the following novels may be included: The Little Prince, The Outsiders, The Pigman. The reading list will also include selected short stories and poetry, as well as student-selected pieces.

4. MATH HOMEWORK • Homework: 10% All homework assigned over a quarter will be part of that grade. The grade will be proportional to the number of assignments the student did. Each HW assignment is worth 10 points. Incomplete homework will be counted as ½. Late work: will be counted as 6/10. However, after one week it will no longer be accepted. The grade of ZERO will not be changed.

Digital Arts 7 Course focus • Students will understand how to use familiar digital tools to draw • To learn basic principles of photo manipulation • Introduction to principles of photography using simple digital cameras • Understand the importance of layout and photo quality in publications for print • Introduction to digital story telling by the creation of simple animation and short videos • To develop computational thinking skills for computer programming though the use of SCRATCH • To increase students flexibility and resourcefulness in the utilization of digital tools

14. VISUAL ARTS 7 • Students will be working with some big ideas as objects and patterns. Projects include elements of art like color, texture and space, watercolor illustration, enlargement, and 3-dimensional techniques using a variety of materials. Activities are balanced with individual and group free projects, where students may choose topics of their personal interest. • Fine Arts Rotation for 7th grade Students who are not in Band get to choose two arts between Digital Arts, Drama, and Visual Arts. Those classes alternate days throughout the year. For example: they can have Art on Block 8 on Tuesday and Friday 1 and have Drama on Thursday and Friday 2.

15. DRAMA Students are engaged in: • theater games that help them develop expressive use of the body and voice, • improvisational techniques, • dramatic interpretation, and • Playwriting Success in drama is measured mainly through on-going participation, engagement, cooperation, and discipline.

DRAMA - MATERIALS • Students should come to drama classes wearing comfortable clothes that allow for a large range of movement that are appropriate for warm-ups and improvisations and do not limit the student’s body-expression. • Note that they are on stage, so there are safety issues as well as issues of modesty.

MUSIC • All courses are open to 6th through 12th Grade students • Choir • Beginner Band - for true and false beginner instrumentalists • Intermediate Band – for instrumentalists who have about a year of experience • Concert Band – students that can deal with a variety of demands both technically and theoretically (principal performance group)

19. INTEGRATED HEALTH UNIT Drug and Alcohol Awareness ENGLISH: Students will investigate the concept of addiction and experience one week without TV and internet. SOCIAL STUDIES: Students will analyze and discuss news articles about the social impacts of drug use. MATH: Students will use a Computer Model to study drinking patterns and blood alcohol content. SCIENCE: Students will take an in depth look at the brain’s response to various drugs of abuse - marijuana, stimulants, hallucinogens, inhalants, opiates, and steroids. We will also discuss the long term and short term effects that these drugs have on our bodies.

22. Common Policies TARDINESS TO CLASS: • After August 10th, if students are late they will serve a detention after school with the principal. The procedure is: • Inform the student that they will be referred to the office for a detention the following day. • Send an email to the principal the same day the student is late. • Principal will communicate with parent and student and will take care of the detention.

23. Common Policies PLAGIARISM: • First occurrence: The teacher will meet with the student and the incident will be recorded. The student will be informed that he/she may receive a “0” for the work in question. A parent meeting may be called. • Second occurrence: The teacher will hold a meeting with the student, counselor and parents to discuss the issue. The first cheating incident will be discussed as well. A summary of the meeting will be shared with the principal. • Third occurrence: The parent will be called in for a conference with the student and principal. The student may be suspended from school. In addition, the student may be referred to Conselho de Classe and asked to leave the school

24. Common Policies CELL PHONES: • Cell phones used in class without permission of the teacher will be collected and given to the principal. • Student will get it back the next day.
