  1. Portable IDS Design Issues and Tradeoffs Lee Alexander Intelligent Vehicles Lab University of Minnesota

  2. Overview • Portable IDS - Features and Constraints • Design Options • One Proposed Design

  3. Portable System Functionality • Mainline Sensors • Radar • Provide range, range rate, lane of travel, time to intersection for all vehicle within region of interest • Minor Road Sensors • Lidar based vehicle classification • Radar approach tracking • Crossroads Sensors • Laser scanners as opposed to cameras

  4. Leveraging Existing IDS System • Software Directly Applicable • Sensor processing • Data acquisition • Hardware Directly Applicable • iDAQ computers • Main process computers • Archival Terraserver • Analysis Tools • Gap acceptance analysis tools • Near miss identification

  5. Portable System Design Constraints • Safety • Local Codes and Regulations • Environmental Concerns (Noise) • Transportability • Ease of Installation • Security • Theft • Vandalism

  6. Significant Design Issues • Sensor Mounting • Power distribution • Data transmission • Main Controller Cabinet/Workstation location

  7. DOT Supplied Signposts Minimized shipping costs Appears permanent, may deter theft/vandals Stationary/stable Requires commitment/effort from DOT U of MN Supplied Tripods Increases shipping costs (big, heavy, bulky) Less than permanent, may attract thieves Depending on ground conditions, stability might be an issue Sensor Mounting Options

  8. Utility company power drop Solar cells with battery storage Generators running 24/7 Intermittently running generators + battery storage System Power Options

  9. Wireless Eliminates Ethernet cable laying on the ground Bandwidth, range, reliability, local environmental effects Wired High reliability Cabling, rodents, vandals, cost. System Data Transfer

  10. Pros No need to get up high (no expensive, bulky masts, power line issues) Lasers are less expensive than IR Cameras Lasers are less sensitive to environmental conditions Less data to store Cons/Questions Would states allow laser sensors in median? Place on breakaway mounts, located close to ground Possible (but unlikely) obstruction of sight lines in median. Laser Crossroad sensors

  11. Our Trailer vs. rented construction trailer Standard office trailer - portable Converted shipping container - more secure Equipment Office equipment Data acquisition computers 19” rack for electronic equipment Power source Main Controller Trailer/Cabinet

  12. Security Remote sensors 3# U channel looks official, secure Need to have means to secure power source (channel pounded into ground) Main Trailer Locked/checked/armed with an alarm? Local DOT Support Refueling? Are states willing do to this? Status Checks? Security Visits? Security - Support

  13. Proposed Layout

  14. Typical Sensor Station Battery, Charger, Computer, Wireless

  15. Office Options

  16. Questions for you • Local codes? • Noise restrictions? • How much help should we plan on from local DOT’s? • Signpost installation • Security • Fuel for generators • Have we missed anything important?
