  4. Fight for rights • Role changed due to feminist movement • Protested and picketed • Strikes against sexist laws

  5. Results • More job opportunities- wages 45% less • Frontiero v Richardson in 1973- illegal wage discrimination • Mid 70s- women earned right to work politics, science, business, and law. • Right to choose abortion • Laws around divorce, rape, and healthcare reformed

  12. WaterGate/Nixon • Tapes of Whitehouse meetings • Faced impeachment, resigned • VP Ford granted Nixon a pardon • Ford’s polls dropped from 71 to 49%

  14. Vietnam • People don’t want the war • Violence on TV • Vietnam didn’t want us there • Gov made public think war was necessary • Men killing, being killed for nothing • Lost war- no longer ‘invincible’ • Lose pride, confidence, become suspicious

  16. How it started • Oct 6 1973 USA support Israel in war with Arab neighbors • Oct 19 oil-exporting countries of ME cut off oil to US • In response oil prices skyrocket • High Energy use--10 MPG or less • Homes/businesses poorly insulated

  17. Effect on Auto Industry • Limited sales of gas, gas station hours • Auto industry lost business • Detroit lost revenue to fuel-efficient imports • Auto companies went bankrupt/ forced to convert to natural gas (pricy) • Auto industry- high costs, low profit, layoffs, bankruptcy

  18. Effect on usa • Shortage of electricity, gas, heating oil • Factories and schools shut down • Commercial flights canceled • Electrical brownouts
