To do so, focus on ensuring that your foot does not land in front of your body, but underneath it. To launch yourself you need to push off with rear toes. Instead of wrapping your thumb you can just place it next to your index finger which will alleviate the pressure on your arms and instead focus the attention on your back muscles.
