Welcome back to… the Third Year • Specialise even more this year • Develop a deeper understanding and skills in more specialist areas • Develop your personal skills – independence, critical thinking and analysis etc. • Group design project • Third year counts towards degree classification • https://www.sheffield.ac.uk/ssid/exams/classification

  3. Passing the year and progressing to Y4 • Average of 49.5% and 120 credits • Year in industry students: average of 55%. • Discretion of the board of examiners down to 100 credits • Otherwise exit with unaccredited BEng. • You do not get resit attempts in August • Work hard – 100 hours per 10-credit module • Manage your time (coursework deadlines) • Attend lectures (don’t rely on lecture capture) • Attend tutorials (they are there to help and give you feedback*)

  4. Options you need to think about • Now - you can still change optional modules until the end of week 3 – need to complete an online add/drop form • Can still transfer on to year in industry, but need to tell us now.

  5. Communication • Check your emails regularly • Use dept and uni website info • General enquiries: • Ask at AJB reception • Email acse-support@sheffield.ac.uk • Personal tutor – academic welfare + references • Lecturers – module specific queries

  7. Y3 - what’s new? • Curriculum changes not as drastic as in Y1/Y2 • New modules • ACS341 Machine Learning • AER324 Aircraft Dynamics and Control

  8. Y3 - what’s different? • Changes to Y3 curriculum driven by YOUR feedback. • ACS332 Agent-based modelling - moved to Y4 • ACS335 Embedded systems - also moved to Y4 • ACS321 Digital signal processing - new module leader • ACS330 Group project - more project options

  9. ACS330 Group Design Project • 30 credits • Large design/practical element • Perfect preparation for industry! • Troubleshooting • Project management • Things may/will(!) go wrong… • Be prepared to be flexible! …and adapt quickly!

Enterprise and Entrepreneurship • New extra-curricular module in Semester 2. • Led by Professor Keith Jackson (ex CTO Meggitt PLC and former chair of ACSE Industry Advisory Board). • Interactive workshops, team-work and clinics. • Share business principles, develop business strategies and explore technology exploitation. • Most successful students will go on ‘Dragon’s Den’ style pitch, with possibility of securing financing and coaching. • sheffield.ac.uk/acse/current/eande
