  1. Instrument Classification

  2. How is sound made or created? Sound is created by the motion and vibration of air. Sound is produced when a vibrating system sets air into motion.

  3. Acoustics The science of how sound is created and measured. We measure sound by “frequency” which is measured in hertz.

  4. The science stuff A string has a length of xy. A vibrating string has 3 points of vibration, A, B, and C. soundwave

  5. If we put these 3 points in order of when they happen, first to last, we will get 1 complete cycle of a soundwave. ABACA a = amplitude of vibration l = one complete cycle Complete cycles per unit of time = frequency

  6. f = frequency l = length of one cycle of the soundwave, in seconds L = length of the string T = tension of the string, measured in Newtons m = mass of the string

  7. Essential Concepts All aspects of an instrument have an effect on the “frequency”… Longer = Lower (length) Bigger = Lower (mass) Looser = Lower (tension)

  8. Learning some Latin “Phonos” is latin for sound.

  9. Aerophones Aero = air or wind Air sound Any instrument that creates sound through the vibration of air.

  10. Chordophones Chordo = string or cord String sound Any instrument that creates sound through the vibration of a string.

  11. Membranophones Membraine = skin Skin sound Any instrument that creates sound through the vibration of a stretched skin.

  12. Idiophones Idio = self Self sound Any instrument that creates sound by the instrument itself vibrating.

  13. Electrophones Electro = electricity Electric sound Any instrument that creates sound through electrical means. How speakers work-video
