  1. Sexual Behaviors Chapter 9 Lecture #10 Psyc 1633

  2. Truth or Fiction? • Married people rarely if ever masturbate. • Women who masturbate during adolescence are less likely to find gratification in marital coitus than women who do not. • Women are more likely to reach orgasm through sexual intercourse than masturbation. • Most women masturbate by inserting a finger or other object into the vagina. • Heterosexual people do not fantasize about sexual activity with people of their own gender. Statistically speaking, oral sex is the norm for today's young married couples. • When lovers fantasize about other people, the relationship is in trouble. • Anal sex is more common among less well educated people. • Graham Crackers and Cornflakes were originally developed to combat masturbation.

  3. Sexual Fantasies 95% of men and women fantasize Functions of fantasy: • source of pleasure and arousal • overcome sexual anxiety through rehearsal • acceptable expression of socially unacceptable behavior

  4. Gender and Fantasy • frequency is similar - during sex • topics are also pretty similar - see p247 • prevalence is high in both sexes • 88% of married women engage in erotic fantasies • content varies widely within and between sexes - • men - aggressive, dominant roles • women - passive, submissive roles - also more likely to include relationships and emotional involvement.

  5. Masturbation Historically • has traditionally been condemned as bad • believed to negatively influence health (Kellogg and Graham) • Freud considered it immature Contemporary Views • research suggests it is not harmful • Vatican continues to condemn it

  6. Who and Why? - Masturbation Purposes • relieve sexual tension • valuable means of self-exploration • assists in physical relaxation Who’s doing it? • 63% of men and 42% of women • married people masturbate less • more education is tied to more masturbation. • more negative attitudes towards masturbation are linked with inability to reach orgasm

  7. Men and Masturbation • method can vary, but most men use direct manual manipulation of the penis • take one or two minutes to reach orgasm • lubricants may or may not be used (soapsuds not a good idea) • may rely heavily on fantasy or erotic photos or videos, but don't use "sex toys"

  8. Women and Masturbation • Method varies widely • may stimulate clitoris directly or indirectly - rarely involves penetration (many women start with this method, but give it up as they learn about their preferences) • vibrators may be used (water massage showerheads) • many fantasize during masturbation

  9. Breast Stimulation • Nipples are very sensitive in both sexes, but: • women are more likely than men to have their breasts stimulated • men don't often know - cultural conditioning • gay men are more likely than straight men to have their breasts stimulated • some women prefer NOT to have their breasts stimulated

  10. Oral-Genital Stimulation fellatio - man receiving • sucking and blowing (can be dangerous) are not preferred methods • licking and up and down movements • some myths: semen when swallowed is not fattening or capable of producing pregnancy cunnilingus - female receiving • tongue pressure on clitoris is rarely too harsh • some women report not being able to orgasm by any other means

  11. Oral-Genital Concerns • Some people choose not to participate in this type of sexual expression • body odors may cause disinterest • seeing genitals as "dirty" • may not want to ingest semen • shyness and embarrassment • condemned by some religious codes / illegal in some states • seen as "unnatural"

  12. Anal Stimulation • many women report wanting anal stimulation at the point of orgasm • heterosexual men often resist this type of sex • 26% men and 20% of women have engaged in anal sex at some time during their lives. (higher rates for more highly educated people) • Religion seems to be a restraining influence on anal sex (people who report having no religion are more likely to participate)

  13. Anal Stimulation - Risks • Anal sex is more risky in terms of disease than other methods • analingus - oral-anal sex • anal intercourse can cause small tears in rectal tissues, and so STD's can be more easily transmitted. • anal intercourse should not be followed by vaginal intercourse • partners who are both free from disease are not able to infect each other through anal intercourse.

  14. For Next Class • Briefly review coital positions in text (chapter 9) • Do some web research on coital positions • Read Chapter 10
