3. سُوۡرَةُ الزّلزَلة بِسۡمِ ٱللهِ ٱلرَّحۡمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ إِذَا زُلۡزِلَتِ ٱلۡأَرۡضُ زِلۡزَالَهَا (١)  وَأَخۡرَجَتِ ٱلۡأَرۡضُ أَثۡقَالَهَا (٢)  وَقَالَ ٱلۡإِنسَـٰنُ مَا لَهَا (٣)  يَوۡمَٮِٕذٍ۬ تُحَدِّثُ أَخۡبَارَهَا (٤)  بِأَنَّ رَبَّكَ أَوۡحَىٰ لَهَا (٥)  يَوۡمَٮِٕذٍ۬ يَصۡدُرُ ٱلنَّاسُ أَشۡتَاتً۬ا لِّيُرَوۡاْ أَعۡمَـٰلَهُمۡ (٦)  فَمَن يَعۡمَلۡ مِثۡقَالَ ذَرَّةٍ خَيۡرً۬ا يَرَهُ ۥ (٧)  وَمَن يَعۡمَلۡ مِثۡقَالَ ذَرَّةٍ۬ شَرًّ۬ا يَرَهُ ۥ (٨)

Al-Zalzala ~ The Earthquake In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful • When the earth quakes with its Zilzal. • And when the earth throws out its burdens. • And man will say: "What is the matter with it'' • That Day it will declare its information. • Because your Lord will inspire it. • That Day mankind will proceed in scattered groups that they may be shown their deeds. • So, whosoever does good equal to the weight of a speck of dust shall see it. • And whosoever does evil equal to the weight of a speck of dust shall see it.

5. Introduction • People who denied the Hereafter had a problem with 3 things:   • Disbelief in Earth’s Destruction • Disbelief in the Recordings of one’s deeds • Unwillingness to give up Intermediaries • In this Surah, Allah shatters these 3 myths!

6. اِذَازُلۡزِلَتِالۡاَرۡضُزِلۡزَالَهَاWhen the earth is shaken the way it ought to be shaken • اِذَا(Idha)  serves as a reminder of what comes after it • Example: • "Keep that time in mind" • "Beware when such and such a thing will happen” • Different from “IF” • Idhadenotes that it is absolutely certain all this is bound to happen • Therefore one should be alert and not spend one’s life unmindful of it. • Passive form: Idha.Why?

7. اِذَازُلۡزِلَتِالۡاَرۡضُزِلۡزَالَهَاWhen the earth is shaken the way it ought to be shaken • A mighty shaking! • Repeating syllables in the word “Zalzala” • 4 letter root word: za l za la: comes, gone, comes again, gone repeated act • Meaning also includes repetition slipping over and over again • Beginning of the end: with Day of Judgment • Extent of Shaking is unimaginable!! • 2nd stage of Resurrection will begin • All the former and the latter generations of mankind will rise back to life • Allah didn’t mention who will do it

8. اِذَازُلۡزِلَتِالۡاَرۡضُزِلۡزَالَهَاWhen the earth is shaken the way it ought to be shaken • Repetition of Zilzal • ‘Hit him with a hit’ means ‘hit him really hard’ • Zilzalaha added for emphasis • Adding ‘ha’ makes it incomparable  “Its earthquake” • Earth’s fulfilling its promise • So…It will be a kind of movement that is • Violent • Continuous • Repeating itself • Not coming to an end

9. وَأَخْرَجَتِالأَرْضُأَثْقَالَهَاAnd the earth shall cast forth its burdens • Akhraja: taking something out • Athqalaha: It’s burdens • Thiql= something heavy, things inside a house • Connotations • The dead who have been buried in the earth and who will be thrown overboard by it on the Day of Judgment • The buried riches and treasures as well as any traces of the hidden offences committed by criminals • The earth will pull out its burdens from inside • Like packing for a travel, Earth is on a journey • Earth gets loaded with our sins It relieves itself • Earth also burps now and then • Answers the 1stquestion  Earth’s destruction

10. Riches of No Avail!

11. وَقَالَالإِنسَـنُمَالَهَاAnd man cries out: What is the matter with her?! • Insan • Nasiya: to forget • He rises with surprise asking, ‘What is wrong with it?’ • You will be raised by yourself • No groups/families • Dead people coming to life Biggest gathering! • Every generation raised at the same time from Adam to the last human being . • Paradox: Together but Most Alone!!! • Insanrefers to Disbeliever versus a Mu’min who will know

12. يَوْمَئِذٍتُحَدِّثُأَخْبَارَهَاOn that Day it will relate all her news According to HadratRabi'al-Kharashi, the Holy Prophet (SAWS) said: "Beware of the earth, for it is your root and basis, and there is nothing which a person does on it, and it will not report, whether it is good or bad." [Mu jam at-Tabarani]

13. يَوْمَئِذٍتُحَدِّثُأَخْبَارَهَاOn that Day it will relate all her news • Yawmaidhin: Warning • Haddatha: To make someone aware of something he/she didn’t know or completely forgot • The earth will remind as Insan is forgetful • People will come into contact with they themselves did and be shocked • Akhbar: News • Hadeeth: On that day the earth will testify every single thing as Allah will make it speak in reality. • Like a M o t i o n P i c t u r e • It is related about 'Ali that when he distributed the money of the Bait al-Mal (public treasury) among the needy ones and thus emptied it, he would perform two rakahs of the Prayer in it and say: “You will have to bear witness that I filled you with justice and emptied you with justice.” • So 2nd question of disbelievers answered: Disbelief in the Recordings of one’s deeds

14. بِأَنَّرَبَّكَأَوْحَىلَهَاFor your Lord will have commanded her (to do so) • Bianna: because of the fact that • Iha: hint • Rabbaka: Your master • 2nd person  Closeness to Messenger • Not Rabbaha: it’s master • Everything else is 3rd person • AwhaLaha: gave it permission and instruction to speak • Earth always wanted to shake, speak & waited restlessly to release its burden

15. يَوۡمَٮِٕذٍ۬ يَصۡدُرُ ٱلنَّاسُ أَشۡتَاتً۬ا لِّيُرَوۡاْ أَعۡمَـٰلَهُمۡOn that Day people will go forth in varying states so that they be shown their deeds • Yawmaidhin #2: • Day on which people will be turned away so they can see their actions • Sadir: left home, got home from well and came back home • The earth is not the same earth as one comes out of the grave • Previous time to do deeds; act • 2nd time: witness our acts • Before you were in control, not now… • Ashtatan: comes from shatta: to break in many pieces • Ashtatunmeans "in a separate or solitary manner“ • And you came to Us alone, the way We created you the first time. [6:94] • Humanity one: come back broken up into different categories • Answers 3rd Question of Disbelievers: No intermediaries

16. يَوۡمَٮِٕذٍ۬ يَصۡدُرُ ٱلنَّاسُ أَشۡتَاتً۬ا لِّيُرَوۡاْ أَعۡمَـٰلَهُمۡOn that Day people will go forth in varying states so that they be shown their deeds • Liyuraw: so they may be shown • Amal: do something consciously • People will be shown their deeds

17.  فَمَن يَعۡمَلۡ مِثۡقَالَ ذَرَّةٍ خَيۡرً۬ا يَرَهُ ۥ وَمَن يَعۡمَلۡ مِثۡقَالَ ذَرَّةٍ۬ شَرًّ۬ا يَرَهُ ۥ Then whoever has done the smallest bit of good will see it, and whoever has done the smallest bit of evil will also see it

18. DEEDS • What a strange Book! No small or big deed has been left out from its grasp. [18:49] • We will even see the things He forgave Mercy of Allah • Good deeds: we need Allah’s Mercy • Bad needs: We need Allah’s Forgiveness
