  3. Alcohol • Alcohol may be the world's oldest known drug. Fermented grain, fruit juice and honey have been used to make alcohol (ethyl alcohol or ethanol) for thousands of years. The production of products containing alcohol has become big business in today's society and the consumption and abuse of alcohol has become a major public health problem.

  4. The Path of Alcohol in the body • Mouth: alcohol enters the body. • Stomach: some alcohol gets into the bloodstream in the stomach, but most goes on to the small intestine. • Small Intestine: alcohol enters the bloodstream through the walls of the small intestine. • Heart: pumps alcohol throughout the body.

Effects of Alcohol In low doses, alcohol produces: • a relaxing effect • reduces tension • lowers inhibitions • impairs concentration • slows reflexes • impairs reaction time • reduces coordination In medium doses, alcohol produces: • slur speech • cause drowsiness • alter emotions In high doses, alcohol produces: • vomiting • breathing difficulties • unconsciousness • coma

  6. DrugDrug abuse is a serious public health problem that affects almost every community and family in some way.

Drug abuse • Drug abuse also plays a role in many major social problems, such as drugged driving, violence, stress and child abuse. • Drug abuse can lead to homelessness, crime and missed work or problems with keeping a job. It harms unborn babies and destroys families. • There are different types of treatment for drug abuse. But the best is to prevent drug abuse in the first place.

  10. Smoking • There's no way around it. Smoking is bad for your health. Smoking harms nearly every organ of the body. Cigarette smoking causes 87 percent of lung cancer deaths. It is also responsible for many other cancers and health problems. These include lung disease, heart and blood vessel disease, stroke and cataracts.). Your smoke is also bad for other people - they breathe in your smoke secondhand and can get many of the same problems as smokers do.

Smoking causes oral or mouth cancer. Smoking causes throat cancer.
