  2. HISTORICAL NOTES • The Maoris –the first people; • Abel Tasman discovered the western coast; • Rediscovered in 1769 by Capitan James Cook; • The war - since 1860 by 1871; • 1907 – the status of a Dominion.

  3. GEOGRAPHY • Cook Strait (North Island and South Island) and a small island (Stewart Island); • The North Island – springs, geysers, watering places; • The South Island – fertile plains, high mountains, the Southern Alps; • Mount Cook – 3,764 m; • Rivers: the Wanganui, the Waikato; • Lake Taupo.

  4. GEOGRAPHY • Natural gas, coal, high-grade ironsands; • Expensive forests; • Population: 3,145,000 in 1976; • 90% - British, 10% - Maoris.

  5. THE NATIONAL ECONOMY • Industry plays an important role; • GRASS – is “the green gold” of New Zealand; • Food Industry (butter, cheese), milk powder factories, meat works, meat canneries; • Mainly farm machinery and equipment.

  6. THE NATIONAL ECONOMY I - The world’s biggest exporter of meat and dairy products! II - The second largest exporter of wool! • Imports: • industrial products, plant, machinery; • motor vehicles, metal goods, raw materials; • semi-processed materials, components, some foodstuffs.

  7. THE SYSTEM OF GOVERNMENT • The House of Representatives; • Governor General – Executive Council – the Prime Minister; • Two big parties: the National Party and the Labour Party.
