  2. History of Lactate • 1808-Lacte identified by Berzelius • 1891-Araki identified lactate concentrations rise in proportion to activation of exercised muscle. Thought this was related to oxygen availability.

  3. History of Lactate • 1907- Fletcher and Hopkins looked at lactate in amphibian muscle • Lactic acid appeared in response to muscle contraction in absence of oxygen • Lactate disappeared when oxygen was present

History of Lactate • 1920’s-Hill, Heidelberg, and Margaria groups • Identification of lactic acid cycle • Aerobic and anaerobic pathways for cellular energy supplies • Rise of lactic acid at onset of exercise as result of oxygen deficit • Correlations of increased lactate and decreased twitch force
