  1. Simplifying Expressions and Multi-Step Equations Review We are learning to…simplify expressions and solve equations by isolating a variable. Wednesday, April 2, 2014

  2. Simplifying Expressions Review • When you are asked to simplify an expression we are looking for you to be able to: • Combine like terms…pieces of a mathematical expression which are exactly the same. • And then re-write and equivalent expression in “simplest form.”

  3. Simplify the expression:2x + x2 – 3 + 3x – 3x2 – 1 Drawing: x x x2 x2 x2 1 1 1 x x x 1 x2 Create and Remove any Zero Pairs!And then write the write the expression in simplest form. Expression in Simplest Form:5x – 2x2 – 4 Practice writing some expressions in simplest form.After you finish each question raise your hand so your teacher can check your solution.

  4. Solving Multi-Step Equations Review • When you are asked to solve an equation we are looking for you to be able to: • Combine like terms (if necessary) • Then find the solution by isolating the variable: • First eliminate any units by adding or subtracting • Then multiply or divide to find the value of one variable.

  5. Solve the equation below: Try practicing solving a few equations with your team! Record your steps: 1 x 1 1 1 1 = 1 1 x 1 1 1 1 1 1 Check your work: 1

  6. Writing Multi-Step Equations Review • When you are asked to write an equation we are looking for you to be able to: • Use the given in the problem situation to create an equation. • Then use your equation solving skills to find the solution to the problem situation.

  7. Seth’s age is 7, which is 3 more than half of Regina’s age. How old is Regina? Verbal Model: Define the variable(s): Regina x = Regina’s age + 3 Seth = Mathematical Representation (as an equation): Solve this equation with your teammates…raise your hand when you are done.
