  2. James 1:26 “If anyone among you thinks he is religious, and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his own heart, this one’s religion is useless.”

  3. To Bridle the Tongue… • We restrain it! We must LIMIT OUR SPEECH! • James 1:19; Proverbs 10:19; 17:27-28 • We use CAUTION! • Do not be hasty. (Ecclesiastes 5:2) • Do not be careless. (Matthew 12:36-37) • Think about what you say (Proverbs 16:23; 15:28) • Guard your mouth! (Proverbs 21:23)

To Bridle the Tongue… • Avoid Gossip What is Gossip? • Bible synonyms for gossip include tale bearing, whispering, backbiting and slander • Whispering and backbiting are listed among the most despicable sins (Romans 1:29; 2 Cor.12:20) • Gossips say things they ought not say (1 Tim. 5:13) • Gossip is motivated by selfish desire (Pro. 18:8)

  5. To Bridle the Tongue… • Avoid Gossip What Harm can Gossip Do? • More than you’d think (James 3:5-6) • It fuels strife (Proverbs 26:20) • It separates friends and loved ones (Proverbs 17:9) • It is a tool of hate, not love (Psalm 41:7; 1 Cor. 13:5)

  6. To Bridle the Tongue… • Avoid Gossip Don’t gossip and don’t listen to it! • Recognize it for the sin that it is (Matthew 12:36-37) • Stop listening to it! • Listening to gossip says as much about the listener as it does about the gossiper (Proverbs 17:4; 20:19)

  7. To Bridle the Tongue… • Direct your words to accomplish something positive • Words are powerful! (Proverbs 18:21) • They can accomplish much good or much evil! • We must use our words to make people and situations better, not worse. (1 Samuel 24 & 25)

  8. Our Words Should Pass These Tests: T – Is it True?H – Is it Helpful?I – Is it Inspiring? N – Is it Necessary?K– Is it Kind? Ephesians 4:25, 28 & 31
