Goals of the international program • Facilitate international research activities of the Offices/Divisions/Centers • Promote International Research • Support Professional Development and Research Capacity Building around the world • Communicate and Disseminate information on NIDA’s programs and exchange science-based knowledge

  4. History and Accomplishments (short, but sweet?) Established May 2001 Members: Jim Smith, Gerry Friedland, Steve Hayes, Ken Hoffman, Nancy Kaufman, Perry Renshaw, Kathy Sanders

  5. History and Accomplishments Recommendation 1. NIDA should increase its leadership role internationally by expanding its fellowship programs

  6. History and Accomplishments Action 1. The budget for supporting the Invest Fellowships, the Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowships, and the Distinguished International Scientist Collaboration Awards has been increased for FY03. This will allow an approximate doubling of fellows supported from 6 to 12.

  7. History and Accomplishments Recommendation 2: NIDA should initiate a “reverse” fellowship to support sabbaticals for US-based NIDA grantees to spend time working in another country

  8. History and Accomplishments Action 2: NIDA plans to expand and redefine its Distinguished Scientist Fellowship program to include US-based investigators to conduct collaborative work in another country.

  9. History and Accomplishments Recommendation 3: NIDA should expand its role in international tobacco research

  10. History and Accomplishments Action 3: NIDA has participated in the recent NIH- wide international tobacco research program under lead of the Fogarty International Center. NIDA has also partnered with the Society for Research on Nicotine and Tobacco to support a workshop on global tobacco research at its upcoming conference

  11. History and Accomplishments Recommendation 4: NIDA should stimulate the creation of research networks within foreign countries in order to help create the necessary infrastructure for a self-sustaining research enterprise.

  12. History and Accomplishments Action 4: International Forum at CPDD (8th year) GRIP program (Global Health Research Initiative) “Packaging” Fellowships

  13. Future Plans Modest proposal: Convene subcommittee (or DTF?) at least bi-annually to review status and solicit advice on new initiatives
