Why MAP-Works at URI? • Data • Desire for better data to understand incoming students • Retention • Increase freshman-to-sophomore rates to align with university’s academic plan • Identifying student issues at mid-term is too late • Minimize % of students who leave by addressing their self-awareness and providing timely intervention • Educating Students: Academic & Interpersonal Success • Students arrive with across-the-board unrealistic expectations • Improve students' ability to succeed academically by realigning behavior with grade expectations and what it takes to succeed as a college student

4. MAP-Works: History in Brief Fall 2013,100+ schools will use MAP-Works! 2005, Ball State partnered with EBI to create MAP-Works. 1989 to 2004, Ball State used MAP in-house. 1988, Ball State developed concept.

Theoretical Foundation • Survey is structured in Student Development theory: Tinto’s Theory of Attrition • Interdependent nature of experiences and interactions as factors that affect commitment to the institution and educational goals • Five Areas: Pre-Entry Characteristics; Goals and Commitments; Institutional Experiences; Integration; and the Departure Decision • Survey reporting structured around theory constructs Astin’s Theory of Involvement • Involvement = investment = retention Chickering’s 7 Vectors of College Student Development • Includes items about self-perceptions of confidence and skills, initial social relationships, and educational goals. • Feedback to students emphasizes personal responsibility and development, and building connections for long-term success.

So based on the research about Early Adjustment to College, MAP-Works… FOR STUDENTS: • Encourages students to build self-efficacy by promoting self-reflection and successful behaviors • Promotes reasonable expectations of college • Serves as a filter for the expectations through which students evaluate their experiences • Collects data and offers targeted opportunity for interventions to occur during the first month • Emphasizes both academic and socio-emotional adjustment

So based on the research about Early Adjustment to College, MAP-Works… FOR THE UNIVERSITY: • Allows for data collection, which: • Can offer opportunities for earlier intervention • Allows IR/departments to learn more about students (as 1 large group or subdivided) • Allows the study of retention patterns • Facilitates collaborations among depts/divisions • Makes possible more meaningful student-to-faculty interactions • Earlier and in-depth information about student self-perceptions and performance • Hard data

14. Logging into MAP-Works • Visit URI institutional link: • https://uri.map-works.com • Follow directions under “Are you a new user?” • Username = your email address • Password = you will create your own

16. This is “real time” data, therefore each time faculty/staff enter the MAP-Works site, the data will repopulate the report.

17. Confidentiality Statement • The first time each term faculty/staff enter MAP-Works, they must accept a confidentiality statement and view a brief video on navigation.

Confidentiality • FERPA • Students, before taking the survey, must approve an electronic waiver indicating they understand appropriate University officials (with a “legitimate educational interest”) will view their responses, in order to support and enhance their student experience. • Questions?
