What is an Ambassador? • 1: an official envoy; especially: a diplomatic agent of the highest rank accredited to a foreign government or sovereign as the resident representative of his own government or sovereign or appointed for a special and often temporary diplomatic assignment2 a: an authorized representative or messenger b: an unofficial representative <traveling abroad as ambassadors of goodwill>

  16. When are You an Ambassador? ANY TIME YOU: • Conduct a public meeting • Give a talk: • At a school • Civic group • Scouts • Participate in an interagency meeting • Meet with mine officials • Respond to an emergency situation

  17. Emergencies • Immediate crisis – what should you do? • Keep yourself safe. • Help others get to a safe place. • Reassure people. • Make sure everyone in vicinity knows.

  18. Door Step DiplomacyOne to One Connections ALWAYS TELL THE TRUTH • Express concern. • Use active listening. • Nod your head, pay attention, be interested. • Use reflective listening. • Say “I see” or “I understand” or “I hear you.” • Use “I” language.

  19. You might have to be an unexpected ambassador when … • Another agency has a crisis but you are called. • Your friends/acquaintances ask you about a particular development. • Examples??

  20. Your already know this – but some tips: • Call ahead • Be on time • Use proper English • Dress appropriately - don’t over or under dress • Have helpful information or know where to get it • Have a lot of business cards

  21. Do your homework. • Know the issue. • Find out if there is opposition. • Who are “they”? • Who are the key players? • What is the history

  22. When you have to give a talk –Do a dry run! • Give the presentation: • Alone in front of the mirror • To family or friends • To colleagues • Role play: • Have someone grill you • Have someone who is obnoxious grill you Need a little practice?

  23. Take someone with you • Safety in numbers • Backup. • A second set of ears helps to avoid the possibility of “but you promised me a new fence!”

  26. Involving the community can improve awareness of SMCRA • Increases support • Part of public service • Public participation is required by NEPA for all federal actions. Citizen input can mean a better all around project.

  27. Get the “leaders” on your side • Both official leaders and unofficial • Community elders • Local business people • Church leaders • Emerging leaders

  28. How to find the leaders - • Check with government agencies : • Federal , state, tribe • County • City • Other governmental agencies ASK: Use the Delphi Technique friends, colleagues, locals, etc.
