  1. LearningStyles in Teaching and Tutoring VOC 1 - Team Jupiter Anne Turunen, Eva Kagiri JussiJärvinen, KatariinaWalker Linda Krokfors 10/09/2012

  2. Learning styles

  3. What are learning styles (LS)? = Various ways of learning • All individuals have one or many preferred ways of learning. • The own-way-of-learning is the result of personality, previous experience (studies, working-life), the outside world, and the co-action within. • Usually, the student has some weak and some strong learning preferences.

  4. Locking oneself to one specific LS limits the learning process. • LS can change over time, may also be practiced. • Learning is most efficient when the student has strengths within all LS.

  5. Teachers may adjust the teaching to match the students preferred LS (meshing hypothesis/matching guidelines). • It is difficult to take all students preferred LS into consideration in the classroom – perhaps impossible.

  6. Students preferred LS is easier to take into consideration in tutoring (=educational support, student counseling). • Problems in collaboration, projects and teaching may sometimes be the result of people having different LS. • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lXtznzqji8U&feature=youtu.be

  7. Practical Examples Early years and kindergarten: - New words - Weekdays - Weather / conversation Elementary school - Biology - field trips, bringing plants to classroom - Learning counting by jumping - Making recycled paper

  8. High school - 'emphasis on theory' - Chemical reactions - Light research papers - Individual tasks

  9. Vocational school - 'learning by doing‘ - How do you learn how to fix a toilet - How do you learn how to make a margarita - How do you learn customer service Universities - Collaborative tasks - roles - Emphasis on theory but level can be affected <theoretical physics vs. geology>

  10. Neil Fleming’s Vark Model • http://www.vark-learn.com/english/page.asp?p=helpsheets Kolb’s model

  11. In this iVET course, we are partly applying Kolb’s model • personal research and reading in preparation of VOC lessons • writing our digital portfolio • presenting interactive sessions on VOC

  12. Do learning styles exist? • The theories of learning styles have met lots of criticism • They should not been mixed up with the theory of learning process! • Learning styles are blamed for being based on “common sense” and not being very well researched.

  13. The “matching-guidelines” for teachers are seen less important and even unethical. • Teachers are expected to help students to recognize their strengths in learning instead of trying to implement different strategies into teaching.

  14. The latest studies have questioned the impact of learning style awareness on the quality of learning. • Strictly adhering to results of a particular learning style instrument which are not considered very relevant by the students, might even cause resentment. • http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=sIv9rz2NTUk
