This study investigates the d-wave pairing in the 2D Hubbard model, revealing that traditional small clusters can misrepresent superconductivity due to their limitations. The research utilizes massively parallel simulations on larger clusters (Zd=4) to confirm the existence of superconductivity, a crucial step toward understanding high-temperature superconductors. The failure of smaller cluster analyses emphasizes the need for advanced approaches in studying correlated electron systems, essential for future breakthroughs in superconductive material design.

  1. d-wave pairing confirmed in the 2D Hubbard model. M. Jarrell. DMR-0312680 16B 8A 16A Number of independent neighboring d-wave plaquettes: Zd=1 Zd=2 Zd=3 The discovery of a room temperature superconductor would revolutionize our society, in much the same way as the transistor did. Unfortunately, due to complexity of these materials the underlying mechanism is unknown, so we are unable to design them. The accepted paradigm for these materials is correlated electrons on a square lattice, the 2D Hubbard model. We have shown that the traditional small clusters, those with small Zd (left), used to study this model can strongly suppress superconductivity, giving misleading results. Massively parallel simulations, the largest ever of this type, on well-chosen clusters (Zd=4, green symbols on graph) confirm the existence of superconductivity. Th. Maier et al. Cond-mat/0504529.
