Vocabulary • Rose Window • A circular stained glass window • Lancet • A tall, narrow window ending in a pointed arch • Bar Tracery • The stained glass windows fill almost the entire opening and the stonework is unobtrusive, • Fan Vault • A characteristic of English perpendicular Gothic architecture in which radiating ribs form a fanlike pattern

French Gothic • Notre Dame, 1180-1200 • Paris, France • Gothic • Northern view of the cathedral, the side where the flying buttresses are visible. • Buttresses helped the cathedral counter the outward thrust caused by the nave vaults holding up the nave walls. • Amiens Cathedral, began in 1220 • Amiens, France • Gothic • Extravagant jamb statues on either sides of the doors. • Contains vaults which elevate to a height of over 140 feet.

French Gothic Continued • Belleville Breviary, 1325 • Artist- Jean Pucelle • Paris, France • Fully modeled figures with a convincing perspective reveal his study of contemporary painting in Italy • Pucelle was also a very close observer of plants and fauna • Reims Cathedral, 1225-1290 • Reims, France • Gothic • One of the largest Gothic churches. • Immense Jamb statues on the sides of the doors.

French Gothic Continued • Rose Window from Chartres Cathedral, 1220 • Chartres, France • Gothic • Stained-glass windows are almost Synonymous with Gothic Architecture. • Abbot Suger called this light, Lux Nova • Chartres Cathedral, 1220 • Chartres, France • Gothic • This is the famous West Façade of the Cathedral. • The two towers are different designs because, often times during the construction of these Cathedrals would take so long that the style would change mid-construction.

Holy Roman Empire • Ekkehard and Uta, 1249-1255 • Naumburg Cathedral, Germany • Gothic • The period costumes and the individualized features of these donor portraits give the impression that they posed for their statues and lived long before the sculptures time • Attached to columns and stand beneath architectural canopies • Virgin with the Dead Christ, 1300-1325 • Rheinisches, Germany • Gothic • Virgin grieving over the distorted dead body of Christ reflects the widespread troubles of the 14th century • This work shows German interest in emotional imagery

  7. Gothic Cathedral • Saint-Maclou Cathedral, 1500-1514 • Rouen, France • Gothic • Has immense flying buttresses to support one main and large tower. • Represents a departure from High Gothic, to late Gothic using the Flamboyant style.
