  6. First Day of Advent

  7. God Became Man The Theotokos (Mother-of-God)

  8. “Blessed are you among women, • and blessed is the fruit of your womb.” (Luke 1:42) • Theotokos is a Christological Title. • Calling Mary the Theotokos tells us a powerful testimony to the reality of God’s incarnation as a human, Christ was formed inside of Mary.

  9. When we follow the example of saying • “Yes” in obedience to God, like Mary, • then Christ is formed in us.

  10. Why Did God Become Man?

  11. Luke 21.25 – 36 • 25 “And there will be signs in sun and moon and stars, and on the earth distress of nations in perplexity because of the roaring of the sea and the waves, 26 people fainting with fear and with foreboding of what is coming on the world. For the powers of the heavens will be shaken. 27 And then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. 28 Now when these things begin to take place, straighten up and raise your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.”

  12. Luke 21.25 – 36 • 29 And he told them a parable: • “Look at the fig tree, and all the trees. 30 As soon as they come out in leaf, you see for yourselves and know that the summer is already near.31 So also, when you see these things taking place, you know that the kingdom of God is near.32 Truly, I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all has taken place. 33 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.

  13. Luke 21.25 – 36 • 34 “But watch yourselves lest your hearts be weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and cares of this life, and that day come upon you suddenly like a trap. 35 For it will come upon all who dwell on the face of the whole earth. 36 But stay awake at all times, praying that you may have strengthto escape all these things that are going to take place, and to stand before the Son of Man.”

  14. We observe three things coming near: • When these things take place, know that your redemption is drawing near • Parable: Because of signs, you will know the Summer is near • Reality: Because of signs, you will know the Kingdom of God is near

  15. Context…Back up to Luke 17.20–21 (The people wanted signs about when the kingdom of God would come) • 20Being asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come, [Jesus] answered them: • “The kingdom of God is not coming in ways that can be observed, 21 nor will they say, “Look, here it is!” or “There it is!” for behold, the kingdom of God is in the midst of you.”

  16. 2 Chapters Later…Luke 19 • Because Jesus is near Jerusalem: • “[the disciples] supposed that the kingdom of God would appear immediately.” (Luke 19.11) • They still wanted a glorious kingdom—and they believed it would happen immediately because they were near Jerusalem.

  17. Luke 19: The “Triumphal” Entry • “Blessed is the King who comes in the Name of the Lord.” (Luke 19:38) • The first thing which this King did when he drew near to the city was weep over it. (cf. Luke 19:41)

  18. Why do we expect the kingdom of God • to be an immediately glorious thing? • Jesus told them repeatedly that this would not be the case…

  19. For instance, in Luke 10:9–12, we read that Jesus told his disciples to: • 9 “Heal the sick in [each town] and say to them, ‘The kingdom of God has come near to you.’ • 10 But whenever you enter a town and they do not receive you, go into the streets and say, 11 ‘Even the dust of your town that clings to our feet we wipe off against you.’ Nevertheless know this, that the kingdom of God has come near.”

  20. Redemption is Drawing Near… • Last verse of Today’s Gospel Reading (Luke 21.36) • “But stay awake at all times, praying that you may have strengthto escape all these things that are going to take place, and to stand before the Son of Man.” • Where do this strength come from?

  21. John 3.16-18 • 16For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life. • 17 For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world might be saved through Him. • 18 He who believes in Him is not judged; he who does not believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

  22. How Do We Find Strength to Stand Before Him? • “No human religion can hold its own • in the face of the judgment, • but it is solely in the blood of Christ • that we have confidence • on the Day of Judgment.” • – Martin Luther

  23. To reiterate, • Today is the First Day of Advent. • GodBecameMan trough the Virgin Mary. • Mary said “Yes” to the call of God • Becauseof her obedience, Christ was formed inside of her. • Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts. (Hebrews 3.15) • Say “Yes” in obedience to the call of God, and Christ will be formed inside of you. • And only then, will we have the strength “to stand before the Son of Man.”
