  3. Angola’s History • Angola became an independent country in 1975. • Angola was former ruled by the Portuguese. • Angola’s land mine population was developed in 1960’s. • Angola is about 480,000 square miles and 50% of the land is infested with land mines.

  4. What Landmines Are • Landmines are small explosive devices that are at or just below the surface of the ground. • When 8 pounds of pressure is applied to the top of a Land mine it goes off. • The most common land mines are: M14 anti-personal land mines, M16 anti-personal land mines, & M15 anti-tank land mines.

  5. What Land Mines Can Do • Land mines are designed to disable military personal. • 49% of all Land Mine victims are children. • Only 7% of land mine victims die. • If a Land mines goes off and a person is near by the person will probably have a limb blown off. • After A persons limb is blown off it will probably be substituted with prosthetics.

  6. How Bad Are Land Mines • Every 1 of every 334 people are victims of land mines. • 98% of all land mine victims are civilians and are not military personal. • There is an estimated 9-15 million land mines in Angola. • Land mines have weakened Angola’s economy, society, and environment greatly.

  7. Removing Land Mines • Many organizations have contributed time, labor, and money. • The United States it self has donated $38,000,000 total to land mine removal in Angola. • Between the years 1995 and 2003 the U.S. have helped remove 319,000 land mines.
