Dental Hygiene • Competitive Admission • Full-time, day enrollment only • Length of time (7 quarters/2 years) • Estimated tuition/fees for 2010-11 year is $13,256 (This does not includes prereqs to get into the program) • New application expected in early September 2011 at the Dental Hygiene website: www.lwtc.edu/alliedhealth Make sure you stay up to date with the most current version

Admission Schedule September 2011 Application packet available New applications will be posted to the Dental Hygiene webpage in early September 2011 www.lwtc.edu/advising/alliedhealth December 2011 All prereqs must be completed by end of Fall Quarter or semester 2010 to apply for Fall 2011 February 2012 Application due to Enrollment Services March/April 2012 Candidates selected to move on in the application process will complete an interview Fall 2012 Dental Hygiene coursework begins

Program Prerequisites Math College level (102 or above) 5 credits Chem& 121 Principles of Chemistry 5 credits Chem& 131Intro to Organic/Biochemistry 5 credits Biol& 241**Anatomy and Physiology I 6 credits Biol& 242Anatomy and Physiology II 6 credits Engl& 101 Written Expression 5 credits Psyc& 100 General Psychology 5 credits Cmst& Oral Communication 5 credits Soc& 101 Intro to Sociology 5 credits Biol& 260 Microbiology 5 credits Nutr&101Nutrition for Healthcare Prof 5 credits **Must take Biol& 211 before Biol& 241 at LWTC **All science courses must have been completed within the last 7 years, which includes chemistry, anatomy and physiology, microbiology, and nutrition. **ALL PREREQUISITES MUST BE COMPLETED BY THE END OF THE FALL TERM PRECEEDING YOUR APPLICATION TO THE PROGRAM.

Complete Application Includes • Application to Lake Washington Technical College • Submitted TEAS scores electronically to LWTC if taken elsewhere; LWTC –TEAS test takers can have scores looked up by Enrollment Services • Minimum GPA of 2.7 in each prereq course • Copy of CDA certificate (if currently Certified Dental Assistant) • Work experience verification form(s) from employer in sealed envelope(s) • Official, sealed transcript(s) from all colleges • Proof of 2 of 3 Hep B vaccinations or proof of immunity

  8. Selection Criteria: Education AA, AS, AAS, ATA or equivalent: 5 Points BA, BS, MA, MS and higher: 10 Points

Selection Criteria: Prerequisites • Science: Only grades from Chemistry, Nutrition and Biology are used for admission • Other Prerequisites: Only grades from Psychology, Sociology, English, Speech, and Math are used • The cumulative science GPA is calculated as follows: • GPA of 3.6 or above is 30 points. • If below 3.6 multiply actual GPA times 8.3333 • The cumulative GPA for other courses is calculated as follows: • GPA of 3.6 is 10 points • If below 3.6 multiply actual GPA times 2.7777 for points

Selection Criteria: Work Experience • Minimum 1400 hours of medical related patient care experience: 5 Points • Min. 250 hours of dental office patient care experience (including volunteer work): 5 Points • Current Certified Dental Assistant: 5 Points • Minimum 1400 hours of (chair side) dental assisting employment: 10 Points

Selection Criteria: TEAS • The TEAS will have Grammar/language usage, reading comprehension, math, and science sections • TEAS points calculation: Composite % divided by 100 and multiplied by 30 plus the TEAS-Reading score divided by 100 and multiplied by 10 combine to give applicant a possible 40 points • Can retake after 30 days. After that—a calendar year.

TEAS = Test of Essential Academic SkillsVersion 5 Required Reading – paragraph comprehension, passage comprehension, and inferences/conclusions (48items, 58 minutes) Math – whole numbers, metric conversion, fractions, decimals, algebraic equations, percentages, and ratio/proportion, stats (34 items, 51 minutes) Science –science reasoning, science knowledge, biology, chemistry, anatomy, physiology, basic physical principles, and general science (54 items, 66 minutes) English and Language Usage – punctuation, grammar, sentence structure, contextual words, and spelling (34 items, 34 minutes) GRAND TOTAL=170 questions in 3 hours & 29 min.

  14. Selection to the Interview Candidates with the 70 highest scores will be invited to interview. Interview: Candidates are scored on professional dress, communication skills, and critical thinking skills. – 40% TEAS: English – (Adjusted individual score taken from the Individual Performance Profile). –30% Candidates carry over 30% of their score from part one of selection process.

  15. Selection to Dental Hygiene The candidates with the top 30 scores in part 2 of the selection process will be offered a position for the following year. A $500 non-refundable deposit (applicable towards tuition) is then due. There is no waitlist for the program.

  16. Application Stats from February 2011 79 Total Applicants Applicants selected for interviews (on average) had: An Associates Degree 3.6 on Science Prerequisites 3.6 on Other Prerequisites 1400 hours chair-side Dental Assisting employment Average TEAS Composite score of 76 Average TEAS Reading score of 78.9 Average TEAS English score of 79.8 (Used in Phase Two)

  17. Submit official transcripts before you apply… • Don’t wait until you apply to submit official transcripts! You can submit them prior to applying.  The sooner you submit official transcripts, the sooner they can be officially evaluated.  • Our evaluators are now evaluating transcripts based on the program a student intends to enroll in.  • Once your transcripts are officially evaluated you will be able to track your progress using degree audit.  • Students will not need to resubmit transcripts with their application if they do so prior to the application deadline.

  18. Where do I go from here? If you have additional questions, the LWTC Advising Team can help -Quarter-by-quarter class plans are developed during Allied Health GPS. You will need to bring one of the following unless you already submitted official transcripts prior to session: *COMPASS scores *Unofficial transcripts *Agency assessed transcripts if international transcript Registration is required: (425)739-8300 -If you already have a class plan & want to check in on your progress OR are nearly complete with prereqs—go to drop-in advising. 10-15 minute types of questions can be handled in this setting by General Advisors. Drop-in Advising Hours Monday-Thursday 8am-3:30pm Fridays 9:30-3:30pm Tuesday-Wednesday 4:30-6:00pm (at the Enrollment Services windows area or in Assessment)
