  1. LUSIX-ray Correlation Spectroscopy InstrumentAdvanced Procurement Review :Large Offset Monochromator Aymeric ROBERT – XCS Instrument Scientist Eric Bong – XCS Lead Engineer April, 2009

  2. XCS Instrument Overview 600 mm 2x 2 mm 3 mm 30 mm 1400 mm ( Floor )

  3. XCS Large Offset Monochromator Transport Tunnel The LUSI monochromator is an important component of both the XCS and XPP Instruments. The design of both monochromator should be to the extent possible similar. 2.1. The monochromator shall be operated with a fixed horizontal large offset of 600 mm as well as an independent rotation of the two parallel crystals. 2.2. The monochromator shall provide a monochromatic beam in the range from 4kev up to 25keV. 2.3. The overall length of the monochromator should be as small as possible 2.4. The monochromator should accommodate Silicon and/or Diamond single crystals in (111) and (220) orientations over the full range of energy described in 2.2. 2.5. The possibility of having permanently 2 different crystals should be investigated FEH Hutch 4

  4. XCS LO-Mono Methodology Produce Physics Requirement Document Investigate previous solutions Done at ANL, ESRF, DESY Same approach as ANL for the procurement But DESY’s recent concept P3 SLAC plan to contract design/build Write ESD & purchase docs for design/build • Multiple vendors expressed interest in mover design/build

  5. XCS Large Offset Monochromator • Safety • Preliminary concept • Set low current trip threshold of motors (software) • Training to become authorized to repair • Installation • Need to coordinate with vendor regarding the hazards associated with monochromator installation, initial turn on and rigging • Seismic • The entire system will be reviewed and approved by SLAC for seismic safety • Electrical • NRTL, SLAC Inspection and approval

  6. XCS Large Offset Monochromator • Device Location : X-ray Transport Tunnel • LO-Mono relocated closer in March 2009 • Approx 40 meters upstream the sample. • Same concrete slab as all the optical components of the XCS instrument. • Expected Temperature stability : ±1F • Vibration spectrum, not known yet : the FEH hutches and utilities supplies are not built yet. Should be completed end of this year. Transport Tunnel FEH Hutch 4

  7. XCS Large Offset Monochromator Conceptual Design based on experience : no commercial item available Troika, ID10B, ESRF Transport Tunnel Currently getting build Kohzu, BL24XU, Spring-8 FEH Hutch 4

  8. XCS Large Offset Monochromator • Conceptual Design Possibilities • 1st approach (ESRF/APS) • First crystal is fixed • Second crystal translates all the way • 2nd approach (Kohzu) • First Crystal translates all the way • Second crystal is fixed • 3rd approach (DESY) • First crystal is translates half the length • Second crystal translates half the length • X-ray beam is always going to a fixed center, which might be useful for alignment Transport Tunnel FEH Hutch 4 XCS prefers the DESY approach

  9. XCS Large Offset Monochromator Translation of both crystals to cover the entire energy range Transport Tunnel FEH Hutch 4

  10. XCS Large Offset Monochromator Monochromator Crystals • The approach is to get 2 different crystals permanently installed in the monochromator • Full cover of the energy range • Si(111) and Si(220) • Moderate length of the LO-monochromator • More flexibility in terms of coherent illumination conditions Transport Tunnel FEH Hutch 4

  11. XCS Large Offset Monochromator • Minimizing the length and crystals travel • The full range can be covered with the use of two different crystals. Transport Tunnel FEH Hutch 4

  12. XCS Large Offset Monochromator • 2 crystals : more adapted to coherent scattering experiments Transport Tunnel FEH Hutch 4

  13. XCS Large Offset Monochromator The documentation prepared by the XCS instrument integrated team is “deeply” inspired from the documentation Produced by the APS for a large offset monochromator Transport Tunnel 1st and 2nd crystal motions description FEH Hutch 4

  14. XCS Large Offset Monochromator • Crystal Motion Requirements Transport Tunnel • Diagnostics for alignment • The design should include some diagnostics aiding the alignment of the LO-mono. • SLAC is already providing upstream and downstream diagnostics • Need for a design (based on LUSI existing diagnostics design and performances) to be located at the central point (Screen + diode) FEH Hutch 4

  15. XCS Large Offset Monochromator • Additional Requirements Transport Tunnel FEH Hutch 4

  16. XCS Large Offset MonochromatorEngineering Specifications

  17. Acquisition Strategy • The Large Offset Monochromator will be procured as a Design/build contract. • To sole or not to sole source… • Current plan is to go out for bid

  18. Status of Discussions with Vendors • Cost based on ANL Offset Monochromator • Potential Vendors : • Accel • Interested in bidding on contract • Has built similar equipment • JJ X-Ray • Interested in bidding on contract • Oxford Instrument • Will send RFQ • KTC (US Vendor) • Interested in bidding on contract • Precision motion experience • No monochromator experience

  19. XCS Large Offset Monochromator XCS Large Offset MonochromatorProcurement Specification

  20. XCS Large Offset Monochromator Schedule • Possible advanced schedule • Must re-baseline P3 schedule to validate advanced schedule

  21. XCS Large Offset Monochromator • Vendor Selection Criteria : identical to XPP procurements
