2. WHAT IS PBIS? • PBIS is a series of positive strategies/practices to create a safer and more effective school.

3. WHAT ARE THE COMPONENTS OF OUR PBIS PROGRAM • Expectations/ Rules • Rewards • Consequences

4. HOW DOES PBIS WORK? • Identify the behavior you want to see • Teach the expected behavior • Practice the expected behavior • Provide meaningful reinforcement • Enforce consequences for negative behavior

6. EXAMPLES OF RESPECTFUL BEHAVIOR: • Follow staff directions the first time they are given • Keep your hands and feet to yourself • Raise your hand for help

7. EXAMPLES OF SAFE BEHAVIOR: • Walk on the right side of the hallway • Ask permission to leave the area • Push in your chair when you are done with it • Keep your hands and your feet to yourself

8. Examples of RESPONSIBLE Behavior: • Clean up after yourself • Use your inside voice • Go straight to your destination • Complete your work

9. REINFORCEMENTS OF GOOD BEHAVIOR • Starbucks maintain consistency each time they are given • Staff hand out “Starbucks” to students caught being respectful, responsible, or safe • Students will “buy” prizes with Star Bucks they earn • Verbal praise and recognition

10. EXAMPLES OF INCENTIVES FOR PBIS • Stickers • Pencils • Special seat in class • No Homework Pass • Lunch Bunch • Movie

11. EXAMPLES OF CONSEQUENCES • Warnings • Redirection • Time Out • Loss of privileges • Bounce to another class • Phone call home • Parent/teacher/student conference • Office referral

13. ESTABLISH RULES • Identify the behavior you want to see • Teach the expected behavior • Provide examples • Practice the expected behavior • Provide positive reinforcement

15. TIPS FOR SETTING RULES • Define 3-5 rules at home • Focus on what you want your child to do, instead of what they are doing wrong • Determine rules according to your child’s age and maturity level • Use positive language when setting rules. Do not start the rule with the word “NO”

16. TIPS FOR SETTING RULES • Identify patterns of behavior to address (aggression, manners, academic work) • Make a poster of the rules with the children and post it in a visible space in the house • Share rules with other adults in the house and encourage them to follow your home rules RULES

17. PBIS AT HOMEPROVIDE REINFORCEMENT • Establish a reward plan to reinforce the behaviors that you want to see • Determine simple and realistic rewards • Parents and children can work together to identify rewards

18. MEANINGFUL REINFORCEMENT • Frequently acknowledge when your child is displaying the positive behavior (even if it seems to be too frequent) • Effective rewards don’t have to cost money

20. CONSEQUENCES FOR MISBEHAVIOR • Define consequences ahead of time before the misbehavior occurs • Parents and children should know exactly what the consequence will be • First give a reminder or warning of the consequence to come • Follow through with the consequence • Be consistent

21. ESTABLISHING CONSEQUENCES • Effective consequences are clear, specific, and time limited • Avoid yelling, sarcasm, name calling, insults, or physical punishment • Agree on consequences with the other parent or other adult in charge of the children

22. EXAMPLES OF CONSEQUENCES FOR NEGATIVE BEHAVIORS • Take away privileges (tv, playing outside, computer time, cell phone) • Earlier bed time • Write an apology letter • Do not attend scheduled event

23. HOW CAN YOU HELP AT SCHOOL? • Talk to/remind your child about the expected behaviors at school • Volunteer to visit classrooms with the Star Bucks cart • Donations – Happy Meal toys, stuffed animals, party favors, erasers, pencils, etc.
