ETERNAL PURPOSE Lesson 2 God His Purpose and Predetermination
INTRODUCTION • The True and Living God purposed REDEMPTION for man in eternity. • God, being whom and what He is, was able, not only to purpose his plan of REDEMPTION, but was also able to predetermine this plan and then successfully work it out.
THE ESSENCE & BEING OF GOD • A). God is eternal: Exodus 3:14 Moses has asked God what he should tell the Israelites when they ask what the name of the God is that has sent him to them. Verse 14 God answers and says tell the people “ I AM WHO I AM.” This is what you are to say to the Israelites: I AM has sent me to you. • This carries the Idea that God always IS, and there is no time when he is not present. The ETERNAL ONE!
THE ETERNAL GOD • Isaiah 40: 28 Do you not know? Have you not heard? The Lord is the EVERLASTING God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary and his understanding no one can fathom. • 1 Tim 1: 17 Now to the King ETERNAL, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory for ever and ever. Amen
THE ESSENCE & BEING OF GOD • B). God is Spirit: John 4:24 God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in spirit and in truth. • C). God is Omniscient (all-knowing) Psalm 139:1-6 O Lord, you have searched me and you know me. You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways.
GOD IS ALL KNOWING • Psalm 139: 1-6 Before a word is on my tongue you know it completely, O Lord. You hem me in – behind and before; you have laid your hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too lofty for me to attain. • Heb 4: 13 Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.
GOD IS ALL POWERFUL • D). God is omnipotent (All powerful, almighty) • Isaiah 45:12 It is I who made the earth and created mankind upon it. My own hands stretched out the heavens, I marshaled their starry hosts. • Gen 17:1 When Abram was ninety nine years old, the Lord appeared to him and said, “I am God ALMIGHTY; walk before me and be blameless.
GOD IS EVERYWHERE • E). God is Omnipresent (everywhere present) Jeremiah 23:23 & 24 “ Am I only a God nearby,” declares the Lord, “and not a God far away? Can anyone hide in secret places so that I cannot see him?” • Psalm 139: 7-12 Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to the heavens, you are there; If I make my bed in the depths, you are there. If I rise on the wings of the dawn. If I settle on the far side of the sea, even there your hand will guide me.
GOD IS EVERYWHERE • Psalm 139: 7-12 • your right hand will hold me fast. If I say, “Surely the darkness will hide me and the light become night around me.” even the darkness will not be dark to you; the night will shine like the day, for darkness is as light to you.
GOD IS: • So we see God is all powerful, he created everything, things seen, and things unseen. He is all knowing, there is nothing he is not aware of. He is everywhere, and there is nowhere we can go to get away from him. He even knows where we will spend eternity, and has not violated our own free will in the process.
Attributes of God • People often see God as Love, which is true, but God has much more than one attribute. God is: HOLY • JUSTICE • MERCY • LOVE • TRUTH • We must not try to limit God to any one of these attributes, he is all of them all the time!
ATTRIBUTES OF GOD • A). God is Holy: There is nothing like God in the universe. He is set apart and has no defilement, as He is totally Holy. • Isaiah 6:3 And they were calling to one another: “HOLY, HOLY, HOLY, is the Lord Almighty; the whole earth is full of his glory.” • 1 Peter 1: 15 &16 But just as he who called you is HOLY, so be holy, in all you do; for it is written: “Be holy, because I am HOLY.”
ATTRIBUTES OF GOD • B). God is Just: God is first of all Holy, and his Justice stands to protect his holiness. His Holiness cannot be violated. Justice stands with sword drawn insisting that the Soul that Sins must die. • Ezekiel 18:20 The soul who sins is the one who will die. The son will not share the guilt of the father, nor will the father share the guilt of the son. The righteousness of the righteous man will be credited to him, and the wickedness of the wicked will be charged against him.
ATTRIBUTES OF GOD • God is Just: • Gen 18:25 & 26 • Far be it from you to do such a thing – to kill the righteous with the wicked, treating the righteous and the wicked alike. Far be it from you! Will not the Judge of all the earth do right? The Lord said, “If I find fifty righteous people in the city of Sodom, I will spare the whole place for their sake.
ATTRIBUTES OF GOD • God is Just: • Romans 2:5&6 • But because of your stubbornness and your unrepentant heart, you are storing up wrath against yourself for the day of God’s wrath, when his righteous judgment will be revealed. God “will give to each person according to what he has done.”
ATTRIBUTES OF GOD • C). God is Mercy: Mercy is compassion in action. It sees and moves to improve or right the situation. • Isaiah 53:6-12 We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all. He was oppressed and afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth; he was led like a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is silent so he did not open his mouth.
ATTRIBUTES OF GOD • Isaiah 53: 6-12 • By oppression and judgment he was taken away. And who can speak of his descendants? For he was cut off from the land of the living; for the transgression of my people he was stricken. He was assigned a grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death, though he had done no violence, nor was any deceit in his mouth. Yet it was the LORD’S will to crush him and cause him to suffer, and though the LORD makes his life a guilt offering,
ATTRIBUTES OF GOD • Isaiah 53: 6-12 • He will see his offspring and prolong his days, and the will of the LORD will prosper in his hand. After the suffering of his soul, he will see the light of life and be satisfied; by his knowledge my righteous servant will justify many and hewill bear their iniquities. Therefore I will give him a portion among the great, and he will divide the spoils with the strong, because he poured out his life unto death and was numbered with the transgressors.
ATTRIBUTES OF GOD • Isaiah 53: 6-12 For he bore the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors. • GOD BEING RICH IN MERCY REACHED OUT AND PAID THE DEMANDS OF HIS OWN JUSTICE. WHEN WE COULD DO NOTHING TO SAVE OURSELVES.
ATTRIBUTES OF GOD • God is mercy: • Titus 3:5 He saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his MERCY. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit.
ATTRIBUTES OF GOD • D). God is Love The world knows God is LOVE, but do they realize that it is Love that motivates all that God has done for us. Redemption, Sanctification, Righteousness, Propitiation, Reconciliation, Salvation, Glorification, Adoption as Sons, EVEN HIS WRATH is motivated by his LOVE FOR HIS CREATION. Imagine the creator, dieing to save and preserve his creation. That is exactly what God did, he died for those whom he had created, and loved.
ATTRIBUTES OF GOD • God is Love • Psalm 24:6 Remember, O Lord, your great mercy and LOVE, for they are from of old. • Romans 5: 6-8 You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous man, though for a good man someone might possibly dare to die. But God demonstrates his ownLOVE for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
ATTRIBUTES OF GOD • God is Love: • 1 John 4:8-11 Who ever does not love does not know God, because God is LOVE. This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. This is LOVE: not that we loved God, but that he LOVED us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.
ATTRIBUTES OF GOD • E). God is Truth: There is only one thing that God cannot do. He cannot lie! God is truth. • Romans 3:4 Not at all! Let God be true, and every man a liar. As it is written: “So that you may be proved right when you speak and prevail when you judge.”
ATTRIBUTES OF GOD • God is Truth: • Hebrews 6:13-20 • When God made his promise to Abraham, since there was no one greater for him to swear by, he swore by himself, saying, “I will surely bless you and give you many descendants.” And so after waiting patiently, Abraham received what was promised. Men swear by someone greater than themselves, and the oath confirms what is said and puts an end to all argument.
ATTRIBUTES OF GOD • God is Truth: • Hebrews 6: 13-20 Because God wanted to make the unchanging nature of his purpose very clear to the heirs of what was promised, he confirmed it with an oath. God did this so that, by two unchangeable things in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled to take hold of the hope offered to us may be greatly encouraged. We have this hope as an anchor for our soul, firm and secure.
ATTRIBUTES OF GOD • God is Truth: • Hebrews 6: 13-20 It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain, where Jesus, who went before us, has entered on our behalf. He has become a high priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek. • John 14:6 Jesus answered, “I am the way and the TRUTH and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
THE GOOD NEWS • God is Holy, and his Justice stands with sword drawn saying the soul that sins must die! His Mercy stands compelling I must do something to save this condemned man, (or woman) and Love moved by mercy says “I’LL PAY THAT PRICE FOR SIN! So it was that God paid the price for sin, satisfying his justice and protecting his Holiness. God is Truth and you can believe his promise. If he says our sins are forgiven than they are.
PURPOSING & PREDETERMINING • God purposed (“a setting forth.”) • Romans 3: 25 • God presented him as a sacrifice of atonement, through faith in his blood. He did this to demonstrate his justice, because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished-
PURPOSING & PREDETERMINING • Romans 8: 28 & 29 • And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose, For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the likeness of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers.
PURPOSING & PREDETERMINING • Eph 1: 9-11 • And he made known to us the mystery of his will according to his good pleasure, which he purposed “IN CHRIST”, to be put into effect when the times will have reached their fulfillment – to bring all things in heaven and on earth together under one head, even Christ. “IN HIM” we were also chosen having been predestined according to the plan of him who works out everything in conformity with the purpose of his will.
PURPOSING & PREDETERMINING • Eph 3: 10-12 • His intent was that now, through the church, the manifold wisdom of God should be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly realms, according To his eternal purpose which he accomplished in Christ Jesus our Lord. “IN HIM” and through faith in him we may approach God with freedom and confidence.
PURPOSING & PREDETERMINING • God Foreordained/predestined (“to determine before.”) God has foreordained people and things. • Eph 1: 4&5 For he chose us “IN HIM” before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love he predestined us to be adopted as his sons through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will-
GOD CHOSE BEFORE THE CREATION OF THE WORLD • Did you note that in Eph 1:4 &5 that God even before he created anything had already decided we would be HOLY IN HIM (CHRIST) and to be adopted as SONS. This God knew his creation was in need of saving even before he created it, and he determined before the creation just how he would accomplish it. The Bible calls that the Gospel (Good News).
PURPOSING & PREDETERMINING • Acts 4: 27 & 28 • Indeed Herod and Pontius Pilate met together with the Gentiles and the people of Israel in this city to conspire against your holy servant Jesus, whom you anointed. They did what your power and will had decided before- hand should happen.
PURPOSING & PREDETERMINING • God has predetermined plans and individuals. • Jeremiah 1: 5 & 6 • Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.
PURPOSING & PREDETERMINING • Paul Gal 1:14 &16 (Paul speaking) I was advancing in Judaism beyond many Jews of my own age and was extremely zealous for the traditions of my fathers. But when God, who set me apart from birth and called me by his grace, was pleased to reveal his Son in me so that I might preach him among the Gentiles, I did not consult any man,
PURPOSING & PREDETERMINING • JESUS Acts 2: 23&24 • This man was handed over to you by God’s set purpose and foreknowledge; and you, with the help of wicked men, put him to death by nailing him to the cross. But God raised him from the dead, freeing him from the agony of death, because it was impossible for death to keep its hold on him.
THE CROSS OF CHRIST • The cross of Christ is no accident, no oops I have to make a new plain. The Cross of Christ was planned in eternity, and brought about in the field of human history just as God had planned it. No, No, the Cross is no accident, it was predetermined by God himself, that it would be the instrument of salvation.
FOREORDINATION AND PREDESTINATION • Biblical foreordination and predestination are not Calvinistic, predestination. Never at any time is man’s constitution altered or destroyed. Man always has the choice to except or reject God. • Gods foreordaining has to do with redemption..notice Eph 1: 4 & 5 again. (Slide 33)
FOREORDAINING AND PREDESTINATION • 2 Thes 2:13&14 • But we ought always to thank God for you, brothers loved by the Lord, because from the beginning God chose you to be saved through the sanctifying work of the Spirit and through belief in the truth. He called you to this through our gospel, that you might share in the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.
FOREORDINATION AND PREDESTINATION • NOTE: This is a divine choice brought about by persuasion and drawing. • John 3:16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.* For God did not sendhis Son into the world to condemn theworld, but to save the world through him. • *(WHY WAS JESUS NOT SENT TO CONDEMN THE WORLD? BECAUSE THE WORLD ALREADY STOOD CONDEMNED!)
THE WHOLE WORLD SINS • EVERYONE STANDS BEFORE GOD AS A SINNER, CONDEMNED • Ro 3:10 As it is written: “There is no one righteous, not even one; there is no one who understands, no one who seeks God. All have turned away, they have together become worthless; there is no one who does good, not even one.”
FOREORDINATION AND PREDESTINATION • John 6:44&45 • No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him, and I will raise him up at the last day. It is written in the Prophets: “They will all be taught by God. Everyone who listens to the Father and learns from him comes to me. • WE have the responsibility to listen and learn, It’s our choice! No one can do it for you!
FOREORDINATION AND PREDESTINATION • NOTE: Scripture never speaks of one being foreordained before he is “IN CHRIST.” It is a term reserved for all those who are IN CHRIST and therefore it is these individuals that are foreordained, BUT they are foreordained to be “IN CHRIST.” • All the saved were predetermined to be in Christ. This is not taking away anyone's choice. It is always the individuals choice to become a Christian, and be IN CHRIST!
“IN CHRIST” • As you proceed through these lessons, make a note of all the verses which have the phrase “IN CHRIST, or IN CHRIST JESUS”, or “IN HIM” These all connect to give you a picture of the saved, a relationship with God, and the means to be in this relationship. This is the position of the sanctified of God, and it behooves all of us to be “IN CHRIST”.
