  2. Why is this event important? • This event was the major conflict between Jake with the Na’vi, and Quaritch. • This event portrays to the audience the transformations of behaviours, values and personalities of all characters in the movie, and was the main turn over for Jake to becoming one of “the people”

  3. Themes • Unjust able military aggression • The capability of humanity has to cause destruction • Humanities growing materialism and lack of care for the environment • A warning about the risk we are posing t o our own world and future through exploitation of our environment and natural resources

  4. Sequence of Events • The Hometree destruction occurred when Jake failed to get the Omaticaya clan to move • RDA used violence as a way to move the RDA out of their settlement (Hometree). • Attack has been initiated by Parker Selfridge, the corporate administrator for the RDA mining operation hoping to gain access to the valuable Ubatanium deposit situated under home-tree. • Attack is led by the General Colonel Miles Quaritch who is the head of the mining operation’s security detail whose profound disregard for Pandora’s inhabitants is evident in both his actions and language. • The Na’vi people are reluctant to abandon home-tree and defend it fiercely. Their primitive weapons however are almost useless against the mechanized warfare and technology of the invading “sky people”. • Quaritch forces destroy home-tree, killing Neytiri’s father and numerous other Na’vi innocent civilians. • Home-tree collapses in flames after a missile attack, coating the landscape with ash and floating embers.

  5. Close UpAre used to show emotion and in these cases: It shows Jake’s anguish while he is destroying the RDA’s machinery so they can’t continue with the destruction It shows Moat’s grief, confusion, pain and distress from the aftermath of the destruction of their beloved Hometree and it’s surroundings

  6. Red Filters • Red filters are used when the forest and Hometree is engulfed in flames and in this scene implies: • Danger • Fire • The destructive nature of humans • How disrespectful humans are towards nature

  7. Low key lighting and blue filters are used of the machinery and anything associated with the humans and to show the aftermath of the Hometree destruction. • Things that were linked with the humans, portrayed that the humans were harsh and cold. Also, to sow that that their only focus is money and not the environment. • After the tree is taken down it shows how gloomy Pandora looks and how something important has been stolen from the Omaticayan clan. Blue also associates with: • Sadness • Greif • Depression • Lack of strength Blue Filters&Low Key Lighting

  8. Low AnglesLow angle shots of the machinery heading towards home tree, shows that the Na’vi were in a vulnerable and helpless position and make the humans seem superior

  9. Long ShotsAre used to basically give an insight of what is going on and in the picture above shows the emotions of anguish in the expressions of the Omaticayan Clan

  10. Diagetic Sound • Occurs when the Na’vi is being attacked by the marines. The characters and the audience can hear the machines such as loud humming/ whirring of the gunship propellers and soldiers approaching the Na’vi home. The distant rumble of the machines means danger and destruction is approaching. • After the fall of Hometree, we hear the Na’vi people and moat screaming and the braking of the branches

  11. Non Diagetic Sound • The music during this scene is quite dramatised • It symbolises fear, danger and to intensify the audiences emotions • Tempo increase almost like a drumbeat and music become more louder when gunships approach Reflecting that the idea that the gunship is a threat and something to be feared • Once, Hometree was destroyed choir symbolizes death, mourning and grieving for the lives of many

  12. Dialogue • “Keep going. He’ll move” and “They’re just damn trees!” - These quotations are said from Selfridge and shows how oblivious humans can be towards others beliefs, rituals, customs, etc • “You find yourself some local tail you just completely forget which team you’re playing for” and “At first it was just orders then everything changed” -The first quotation is said by Quaritch and the second by Jake and shows how much Jake has developed throughout the film
