This training module covers essential protocols for officer safety during patrols, including house, business, school, construction site, parks, and airport checks. Key topics include personal safety, traffic control, and reporting suspicious activities. Participants will learn to maintain various logs: attendance sheets, equipment sign-outs, and event RSVP logs. Emphasis is placed on communication with dispatch and understanding community interactions. Officers are trained to observe, report, and ensure safety without intervening in suspicious situations.

On Patrol • Before leaving on any patrol check with the watch commander for any special instructions or BOL. • Ask if there is any Police activity taking place which we should avoid, i.e. S.W.A.T, D.E.A., or the like. • Be sure to “41 Victor 99, 10-8” to dispatch when leaving.
House Checks • Upon arrival contact dispatch • Park a few houses away. • “41 Victor 99, 10-6 at E-3” • Make sure you get a response, if none, call on the phone. • Be sure dispatch is not busy with another activity before calling. Check for radio “silence.” • Read all information on the homeowner request.
House Checks • Check doors, windows, back yard (assuming no dog). • Report anything suspicious • DO NOT INTERVENE OR IN ANY WAY ATTEMPT TO PERSUE A SUSPICIOUS EVENT. • If there is a car in the driveway and no indication on the request try the contact number first, then dispatch.
House Checks • It is very important to call dispatch when you are finished and … • “41 Victor 99, 10-8” • If a 10-8 is not reported in a timely matter dispatch will attempt a contact or send an officer to assess the reason.
School Checks It is not necessary to “10-6” unless leaving the vehicle to walk around. • School checks vary depending on time of day and school activity. • Daytime Check • Usually watching for crazy traffic issues and parking zone violations. • Watch for “suspicious” characters around the grounds, especially at dismissal time. • Nighttime Checks are usually drive-by looking for suspicious activity.
Construction Sites • Most construction sites have their own security so we generally do drive-by only. • At night use spots to look around. • The watch commander will let you know if there have been recent theft reports.
Other patrol checks • Parks • It is a good idea to check parks, especially Sherwood. • A walk around the city park and checking the restroom area is a good break from driving around. • Airport • This should be done only after going with an “experienced” CVPP member. • It is a good idea to have a scanner available to listen for aircraft activity. • This is done after dark when air traffic is limited. • Check hanger doors, suspicious behavior. • Avoid CHP hanger area.
