  2. BSP2 Goals (2011-2015) • Empower biologists to be modelsof scholarly teaching and practitioners of science education research. • Expand and support a highly interactive community of Biology Scholars committed to scientific teaching and the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL). • Catalyze deep networks among life science professional societies to collectively engage in sustained undergraduate education reform.

  3. Continuum of Professional Development • Assessment (Measuring Student Learning Institute) • Design course goals and assessments grounded in research on learning • Skills to create, design, plan and implement evaluations • Research (Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Institute) • Design research in learning biology • Skills to create, design and implement studies to assess learning • Transitions (From Science Education Research to Publishing Institute) • Practice evidenced-based research • Skills to identify stages of & responses for publication

  9. A Scholar Sums It Up Best • “Programs like BSP address issues about being trained in the discipline of scientific research and not in the discipline of learning science… • First, by promoting a scholarly approach to teaching, it infuses the act with the language of research that PhDs are comfortable with. This makes the approach to learning about teaching less intimidating... • Second, the immersive format is a key ingredient because it focuses the attention and forces participants to delve into the topic. • Third, programs like BSP offer community-building opportunities, which is important to catalyze true transformation in the teaching of science in higher education. • Finally, BSP programs provide a very large impact on the quality of science standards in our country because these Biological Scholars are all active educators who will implement these better pedagogical practices in their classrooms.” • ~Survey respondent
