  2. UNCLASSIFIED • Motivation for NCMR Scholars Program • Raise student awareness of the IC. • Create group of “reserve scholars” that IC can contact in the future. • Create a social network for student interaction and professional development. UNCLASSIFIED

  3. UNCLASSIFIED • Program Overview • Previous programtargeted students of NCMR researchers: 22 scholars, 16 colleges, 15 states. • Goals for new program: • 100 scholars spread across US. Students need not be associated with NCMR research project. • Automated application process. • Social network. UNCLASSIFIED

  4. UNCLASSIFIED • Student Eligibility • Full-time junior or senior. • Engineering, physical science, and pre-med (life science) major. • GPA ≥ 3.0. • US citizen. • Willing to participate in NCMR Scholars Reserve for 5 years. UNCLASSIFIED

  5. UNCLASSIFIED • Universities Contacted • Past and present NCMR universities. • Participants in a similar NGA program. • “Testbed” university to help with process development and debugging. • 89 universities in 37 states + DC, PR. UNCLASSIFIED

  6. UNCLASSIFIED • Communicating with Universities • Emailed financial aid offices, asked for best point of contact – only 4 responses. • Emailed scholarship coordinators, honors program directors, NCMR research investigators, etc. • Follow-up phone calls. UNCLASSIFIED

  7. UNCLASSIFIED • Automated Application Process • University POC identifies three faculty nominators. • Nominators each nominate one student and write letter of recommendation. • Students provide resume, coursework, and essay. UNCLASSIFIED

  8. UNCLASSIFIED • Scholar Selection Process • Reviewers score essays, letters of recommendation, resumes, and coursework. • Selection panel meets to review applications and award grants. UNCLASSIFIED

  10. UNCLASSIFIED • 2009-2010 Program Status • Automated online application, review, and selection system is operational. • 46 scholars, 23 colleges, 17states. • More universities are interested in participating next year. UNCLASSIFIED

UNCLASSIFIED • Challenges from University Perspective • Compressed timeline: first contact 4/21, online process launched 5/6, application deadline 6/21. • Selecting the best 3 students to nominate requires a lot of time. • NCMR model is best suited to schools with an external fellowships coordinator. UNCLASSIFIED

  12. UNCLASSIFIED • Goals for the Future • Start next year’s process much earlier in the year. • Find contacts at more universities: • Personal contact is important. • The National Association of Fellowship Advisors may be a useful resource. • Establish social network. UNCLASSIFIED
