  2. Five experiences… • My college roommate on GMA • Watchcare

  3. Red Brick Store • …to assist the Brethren in looking to the wants of the poor – searching after objects of charity, and in administering to their wants

  4. Something Extraordinary • Church History Museum

  5. Sarah Cleveland – Nauvoo Female Relief Society • Discussions about the word “relief” • John Taylor – “Benevolent”

  6. Neither one liked the word “benevolent” • Current popularity – didn’t want to be called after other Societies of the day • Eliza wondered if “relief” might convey “that we intend appropriating on some extraordinary occasions instead of meeting the common occurrences”

  7. Emma Smith, told the women, "We are going to do something extraordinary-when a boat is stuck on the rapids, with a multitude ... on board, we shall consider that a loud call for relief-we expect extraordinary occasions and pressing calls." (Minutes of the Female Relief Society of Nauvoo, 17 Mar. 1842.)

  8. Jacob 2How did Jacob feel about his calling? • Weighed down • More desire and anxiety for the welfare of souls than ever before • Grieveth my soul • Causeth me to shrink • Burdeneth my soul But, notwithstanding the greatness of the task, I must do according to the strict commands of God…under the glance of the piercing eye of the Almighty God.

  9. MosesExodus 3 • Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh? • What shall I say? • They will not believe me • I am not eloquent • I am slow of speech • Send whom thou wilt send (someone else)

  10. D&C 123:16-17 Bottled message #1 • You know, brethren, that a very large ship is benefited very much by a very small helm in the time of a storm, by being kept workways with the wind and the waves. • Therefore, dearly beloved (sisters), let us cheerfully do all things that lie in our power; and then may we stand still, with the utmost assurance, to see the salvation of God, and for his arm to be revealed.

  11. What do we learn about weathering the storms in our callings?

  12. What do we learn about weathering storms in leadership and in our lives?

  13. “Small Helms”How to be women of influence? • And it is only too true that many persons drift so carelessly and aimlessly through the world as to allow their surroundings to rule them, instead of impressing the character of a determined human will and noble purpose upon every thing that comes in their way. • -Brigham Young, Contributor, vol 10, Sept 1889, 422-234

  14. “Small Helms”How to be women of influence? • It is not for you to be led by the women of the world; it is for you to…lead…the women of the world, in everything that is praiseworthy, everything that is God-like, everything that is uplifting and…purifying to the children of men. • -Joseph F Smith, RS Gen Board Minutes, 17 March 1914

  15. Leadership For Saints, Ed Pinegar, Roger Dean Duncan, 9-10

  16. It is my meditation all the day, and more than my meat and drink, to know how I shall make the Saints of God comprehend the visions that roll like an overflowing surge before my mind. Oh! How I would delight to bring before you things which you never thought of! But poverty and the cares of the world prevent…

  17. There has been a great difficulty in getting anything into the heads of this generation. It has been like splitting hemlock knots with a corn-dodger (a piece of corn bread) for a wedge, and a pumpkin for a beetle (a Wooden mallet). Even the Saints are slow to understand. • -Joseph Smith

  18. Profound, Persistent and ResistantProblems • By small and simple things are great things brought to pass Vital Behaviors Results Use Six Sources of Influences Jogging, internet

  19. All change is based on two factors: Three things influence those two factors: • Am I motivated? • Can I do it? • Personal • Social • Structural

  20. Values Skills Support Teamwork Environment Incentive

  21. Change the way you change minds Direct Experience Field trip Vicarious Experience Storytelling Verbal Persuasion

  22. Values Skills Support Teamwork Environment Incentive

  23. Provide a “baptism of fire” to help people lose the desire to do evil Give Joseph Smith 10 years mentoring between the First Vision and founding the Church Help Ammon convert Lamoni to influence other converts Send Abinadi to teach Alma before Alma founds a church Create a famine in Egypt to influence Israelite migration Encourage Nephites to keep the commandments by promising they will “prosper in the land”

  24. Ma Naoheakamalu Manuhii 1832-1919 In 1854, President Joseph F Smith came to Hawaii as an orphaned fifteen year old missionary. He became desperately ill, and for three months was tenderly cared for by a dear sister, M Naoheakamalu Manuhii and her husband Many years later, returning now as president of the church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, this tender incident was recorded: “In the midst of all the celebrating, a poor blind woman was led to the prophet. She was calling, “Iosepa, Iosepa.” Instantly, he ran to her and clasped her in his arms, hugging and kissing her – saying, “Mama, Mama, my dear old mama.”

  25. “The women of this church have been doing ordinary things with extraordinary results”

  26. “Small Helms”How to be women of influence? • Leaders prepare other leaders

  27. Keep workwaysDo Cheerfully • Personal Balance: Your being vs doing • Coping with feelings of failure or depression • Leadership positions don’t protect us from temptation ie King David

  28. Do all in your power

  29. A ship is safe in the harbor, but that’s not what ships are made for. William Shedd

  30. I have enjoyed these words of Jenkins Lloyd Jones, which I clipped from the newspaper some years ago. Said he: • (The fact is) most putts don’t drop. Most beef is tough. Most children grow up to be just people. Most successful marriages require a high degree of mutual toleration. Most jobs are more often dull than otherwise…

  31. Life is like an old-time rail journey with delays, sidetracks, smoke, dust, cinders and jolts, interspersed only occasionally by beautiful vistas and thrilling bursts of speed. The trick is to thank the Lord for letting you have the ride. • Gordon B Hinckley, Ensign, March 1997,60

  32. The End

  33. A vision without a task is but a dream. • A task without a vision is drudgery. • A vision with a task is the hope of the world.

  34. The winter of 1838-39 • One of the most trying times in the history of the Church

  35. Let us cheerfully do all things… • But the lessons of the winter of 1838-39 teach us that every experience can become a redemptive experience if we remain bonded to our Father in Heaven through it. These difficult lessons teach us that man’s extremity is God’s opportunity, and if we will be humble and faithful, if we will be believing and not curse God for our problems, He can turn the unfair and inhumane and debilitating prisons of our lives into temples – or at least into a circumstance that can bring comfort and revelation, divine companionship and peace. • Jeffrey R Holland, Ensign, Sept 2009

  36. A well-developed sense of humor is the pole that adds balance to your steps as you walk the tightrope of life. • William Arthur Ward

  37. Influence requires optimism and realism • A balance of faith and facts is essential • A leader believes those she leads can do hard things • Anything worth doing takes longer, costs more, is harder than expected • Difficult isn’t bad, it’s just difficult • A leader believes things will ultimately work out – a crisis is too good an opportunity to waste • Es pres Bensen “we can do it, I know we can” • Pres Monson – those struggling in faith “I would say don’t ever give up” • Pres Hinckley – “things will work out” Korean mission president had experienced flood – response London temple bailing water, Noah had a worse time • Churchill paradox – terrible time – but we will fight

  38. What do we learn about weathering storms in leadership and in our lives?

  39. Leadership is much less a function of position than it is of influence.  And while it is true that some “leadership traits” come as gifts or inherited attributes, it is also true that effective leadership can be learned.

  40. Leadership in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is not just about conducting meetings or “sitting on the stand.”  • At every level, leadership in the Church is about learning how to become an instrument in the Lord’s hands to minister to His children. • Leadership in the Church is about vision and imagination and stretching for greater heights.  • It’s about affirmation and encouragement.  • It’s about teaching and correcting.  • It’s about good listening and good coaching.  • It’s about planning with a purpose and turning good plans into good results.  • It’s about changing lives for the better. • When you become a more effective leader—at home, at church, in the community and elsewhere—your life changes for the better, too. • In the weeks to come, we will share principles and practices that will boost your confidence as well as your competence.
