  2. Cain’s Evil Line • Names the city he builds after his son Enoch • This symbolizes a desire for his own glory • Cain’s line will have a tendency toward seeking their own glory over God’s

  3. Cain’s Evil line:Evil reaches its peak • 7 is also a symbolic number for perfection • 7 generations from Cain is Lamech • Lamech is seen as the “perfection” of evil because he is the 7th generation after Cain. • His crime = bigamy or polygamy (Gen 4:23-24) • Polygamy is offensive b/c it distorts the marriage covenant

  4. Seth is Born • Gen 4:26 - we see Seth’s descendants return to worshiping God • Gen 5:3 - “image and likeness” • Seth was Adam’s son in the same way that Adam was God’s son.

  5. Two lines - Two cultures • Cain’s line: • “Cainites” or “Sons of Man” • (women of this line are called “daughters of man”) • Seth’s line: • “Sons of God” or “Sethites”

  7. Two Cultures collide • Gen 6:2 - • the sons of God began to marry as many wives of the line of Cain as they wanted • Polygamy enters Seth’s line • Evil begins to spread throughout the whole world

  8. The flood is provoked • Gen 6:5-6 • Man’s heart was filled with wickedness and evil • Sin had spread throughout the whole world • Polygamy leads to God’s wrath • We will see this theme throughout scripture

  9. God picks one to start over • Gen 5:29 - • Noah’s father makes a prophecy that Noah will bring relief from God’s curse. • Gen 6:9 • Noah was the only righteous man left. • He is instructed to build an “ark”

  10. Noah’s instructions • Make an ark • 7 pairs of each clean animal • 7 pairs of each bird • 1 pair of all the rest • Gen 6:18 • God promises to make a covenant with Noah

  11. Significant numbers • Number 40: • Symbolic number for periods of trial and repentance • Number 7 - the covenant number • 7 pairs of each clean animal • 7 pairs of each bird • 7th month the ark came to rest on Mount Ararat

  12. God makes a covenant • Gen 8:20ff - • Noah builds an altar offers a sacrifice to God. • What is significant? • He offers the 7 clean animals and the 7 clean birds • God makes a promise to never destroy the earth again

  13. A new creation begins • Notice the new creation imagery • God seems to start over • We notice the same language that was used with Adam at the first creation of the world • Gen 9:1 - be fertile and multiply (Gen 1:28) • Gen 9:3 - every creature is yours (Gen 1:28)

  14. Covenant sign • The sign of the covenant with Adam and Eve was sabbath • The sign of the covenant with Noah is a rainbow

  15. The flood as a “Type” • The flood is a “type” of baptism • We are made a “new creation” in Christ at baptism • Our old self is gone and the new emerges • We receive a blessing and promise that we will not be destroyed

  16. Sin remains and history repeats itself • Noah has three sons: Shem, Ham and Japeth • Ham’s line receives a curse from Noah for disrespecting him and undermining his authority as leader • Ham’s sin is looking upon his fathers nakedness • Ham’s son Canaan is cursed as is his line • The next story tells us what the descendants of Ham did (they are all enemies of Israel)

  17. Tower of Babel • Gen 11:4 • The descendants of Ham decide to make a “name” for themselves • Just like Cain’s descendants they focus on their own glory • They want to reach God without his way

  18. Tower of Babel • Gen 11:5 • God sees their city and decides to confuse their language • This tower is now known as the Tower of Babel or Babylon

  20. Definitions: • Bigamy: Being married to more than one person at the same time • Polygamy: the practice of having multiple wives. • Lamech’s offense breaks the marriage covenant Go Back
