  1. Applications of Cloning

  2. Review • Questions about cloning

  3. Pros Cons

  4. Bananas • Cavendish bananas are all clones of each other. • “Sucker” is planted from one banana tree and it grow into a genetically identical copy of that tree

  5. What would happen if a fungus appeared that destroyed this specific species of bananas?

  6. Medical Applications • Therapeutic Cloning • involves creating a cloned embryo for the sole purpose of producing embryonic stem cells with the same DNA as the donor cell • Can be used to grow healthy tissue to replace injured or diseased tissues • Current method: using adult stem cells – rare and limited in results

  7. Embryonic Stem Cells • Blastocyst – about 100 cells • Stem cells taken out, destroying the embryo • Also can be used to study diseases by cloning cells from animals or humans with different diseases

  8. Potential Drawbacks • Embryonic stem cells act similar to cancer cells • Both have the ability to divide indefinitely • After about 60 cycles of cell division, stem cells can accumulate mutations that can lead to cancer

  9. Other Applications • Bringing back extinct animals • Is Jurassic park possible? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fCyhRi2Fhls • How would this look like? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PJlmYh27MHg

  10. Other Extinct Species http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tjGkRugMcH8

  11. What would YOU clone? • If you could clone a living organism, which one would you clone? Why? • Include where you would obtain DNA and the process you would use to make a clone. • If you do not wish to clone anything, state a reason for your decision and one way you would prevent others from cloning organisms.
