DNA Replication • DNA replication requires a template, nucleotides, and a polymerase enzyme • New DNA molecules are produced by DNA polymerase copying a template • In replication, the process produces two new molecules each composed of one new strand and one old strand • When DNA is replicated, the 2 strands are split and each strand is transcripted to produce a new strand
DNA Structure • Nucleotide building blocks for DNA: adenine, guanine, cytosine, and thymine. • In DNA, Erwin Chargaff found out that there were equal amounts of adenine and thymine, and of cytosine and guanine. • Watson and Crick found that DNA had 3 main components; 1. a five carbon sugar, 2. a phosphate group, 3. and an nitrogenous base • DNA’s backbone has a phosphodiester backbone and is also a double helix • Double helix is made up of long polymers of nucleotides • Watson and Crick also proposed that the two strands were held together by formation of hydrogen bonds between bases on opposite strands
