  3. Batting Average • The total amount of hits divided by the total number of at bats. • Walks, hit by pitch or Sacrifices do not count as an at bat. • Typically, a good batting average for the year is over .300 • Magglio Ordonez 2007 • 216 Hits /595 At-Bats= .363 • Richie Sexson 2007 • 89 Hits /434 At-Bats= .205

  4. On-Base Percentage • Total number of hits + the number of walks + Hit by Pitch divided by At Bats + Walks + Hit by Pitch + Sacrifice Flies • Typically a good On-Base percentage is .400 • David Ortiz 2007 • 182 Hits, 111 Walks 3 Sacrifice flies out of 549 At-Bats. • (182+111+HBP)/ 549+111+HBP+3 = .445 • How many times was David Ortiz Hit by a pitch in 2007? • 4 HBP

  5. Earned Run Average • Total number of Earned Runs multiplied by 9 (innings in a game) divided by the total number of innings pitched. • Un-Earned Runs do not count against the pitcher’s ERA. • Typically, a decent ERA is in the 3’s. Really good ERA is in the 2’s, and anything over 4 needs improvement. • Jake Peavy 2007 • 223.1 Innings Pitched, 67 Runs Scored, 63 Earned Runs • 2.54 ERA
