Nordic Master Programme • Pilot project funded by the Nordic Council of Ministers • Part of the Nordic Council of Minister’s strategy to: • strengthen the Nordic region as a more coherent unit • boost the region’s competitiveness in a globalized world • strengthen the position as an attractive region for education • Supports HEIs in the Nordic countries to develop joint master programmes of high quality • Call for proposals in 2007, 2009 and 2010. Extra calls in 2012 and 2013 (Deadline 15.11.2013) • Allocations of DKK 1 million (2013: 1.1 million) • Programme organiser 2009 ->: SIU • Decision has been made for a permanent programme – First call for proposals expected in 2015

Nordic Master Programme Objectives: • Stimulate and support cooperation between Nordic higher education institutions (HEIs) to develop master programmes offered jointly by the cooperating institutions • Create innovative and attractive master programmes of high international quality • Draw on the strengths of each country and of each institution • Attract the best Nordic and non-Nordic students • Provide the spread of ”best practice” between Nordic HEIs • Strengthen the international profile in Nordic HEIs

Nordic Master Programme Programme requirements: • Programmes must encompass 120 ECTS, i.e. be 2-year courses of study • Each of the participating HEIs must contribute a a minimum of 20 ECTS • Programmes must be taught in English (with possible exceptions) • ”Joint study programmes” with graduates receiving one joint or two/multiple national diplomas, depending on national legislation

  6. Nordic Master Programme Programme requirements: • No limitations with regard to disciplines • The consortium must be able to provide a doctorate within the discipline concerned, by at least one of the partner institutions

Nordic Master Programme Consortia: • Collaborating institutions apply as a consortium • Each consortium must consist of minimum 3 HEIs from 3 different Nordic countries (incl. the autonomous areas, but not the Baltic countries) • One partner acts as coordinator with the overall responsibility of the project (e.g. payments, reporting, etc.)

Nordic Master Programme Results: • 2007: 41 applications, 6 projects granted support • 2009: 10 applications, 4 projects granted support • 2010: 34 applications, 6 projects granted support • 2012: 8 applications, 4 projects granted support Total 93 20 (2 projects have since been cancelled) => 14 Nordic Master Programmes are now up and running • Institutions from all the Nordic countries are involved both as network partners and coordinators • Some institutions are involved in several projects

Nordic Master Programme Experiences: • Many of the overall objectives of the programme has been achieved • The institutions can provide educations they would not be able to offer on their own • Take advantage of established research collaboration • Many institutions have been motivated for developing joint master programmes • Several institutions are involved in more than one Nordic Master Programme • A number of challenges and problem areas has been identified
