  1. Story telling on the web – Using interactive web-reports to tell population health assessment stories APHEO General Meeting November 20, 2014

  2. Ontario Health Profile: Purpose and products • A set of ten population health monitoring “stories” that feature key public health issues in Ontario • Expands our understanding of the health of Ontarians • Equips decision-makers and practitioners with the information they need to take action • Explores new and innovative approaches to accelerate the dissemination and use of population health monitoring • Summary infographics (topic “primer”) • Supplementary data tables at the public health unit level • Expanded web-based report with interactive data visualizations 2

  3. Turning the OHP infographics into an online interactive web-report • PHO’s Ontario Health Profile (OHP) was envisioned as a multi-product initiative • The initial scope of the content was greater than could be included in an infographic (both data analysis and interpretive text) • OHP web based report elaborates on the same 10 stories with interactive data visualizations and more interpretive text http://www.publichealthontario.ca/en/DataAndAnalytics/Pages/Ontario-Health-Profile.aspx

  4. Format overview Navigate through the story using the scrollbar Hover here to get general instructions on interactive with story content Re-use of titles designed for OHP infographics ties products together Story summary and key highlights

  5. Stories include interpretive text along with data visuals… …with options for sharing and downloading content Links to share on social media Link to download Tableau workbook Export to PDF or image file

  6. Example interactive data visualization Hover over data points for more details Select different indicators to include or highlight in the graph Selectors allow for changing what data is visualized (e.g., by PHU, sex, age group, etc.) * NOTE: Graphs are provided for illustrative purposes only and the information should not be used for planning or decision making purposes

  7. Line and bar chart examples Line charts can be used to compare relative impact of different indicators over time Stacked bar charts show distribution of an indicator * NOTE: Graphs are provided for illustrative purposes only and the information should not be used for planning or decision making purposes

  8. Time series and bubble charts Line charts with time sliders to zoom in on the period of interest Packed bubble charts * NOTE: Graphs are provided for illustrative purposes only and the information should not be used for planning or decision making purposes

  9. Maps, reference lines and hover-overs Interactive PHU-level maps Bar charts with reference lines “Hover-overs” to define indicators being visualized * NOTE: Graphs are provided for illustrative purposes only and the information should not be used for planning or decision making purposes

  10. Adding context to visuals Use of hover overs to convey contextual information about the data point Heat maps can show a changing influenza season over time * NOTE: Graphs are provided for illustrative purposes only and the information should not be used for planning or decision making purposes

  11. Development process • Original data analysis completed in Fall 2013 using mostly readily available sources (e.g., using IntelliHEALTH, CCHS Share File, iPHIS) • Software selected was chosen due to ease of content creation and ability to put on PHO website without need for additional infrastructure or costly server software • Aggregate datasets with pre-calculated results were used for data visualizations • Quality assurance process to verify correctness of data, appropriateness of data visualization and associated hover-over information once results were loaded

  12. Creating the data visualization * NOTE: Graphs are provided for illustrative purposes only and the information should not be used for planning or decision making purposes
