Impact study of MAP IOP2B observations on the mesoscale numerical simulation

This study examines the impact of additional MAP IOP2B observations on mesoscale numerical simulations. The most intense rainfall case during the MAP SOP is chosen for investigation, comparing accumulated precipitation, time evolution of precipitation, wind, orographic flow, and thermodynamic structure with radar and radiosonde observations.

MAP IOP2B case • MAP IOP2B is the most intense rainfall case observed during the MAP SOP. • From 00UTC,19 – 06UTC,20. 09.1999 • Meteorological situation: A baroclinic trough associated with cold front was approaching Alps from the west, low level moist Mediterranean air was advected toward the southern Alps.

  14. Conclusion We have studied the impact of the additional MAP observations on the meso-scale numerical simulation. MAP IOP2B, the most intense rainfall case during SOP was chosen for the investigation. Accumulated precipitation, time evolution of the area averaged precipitation, wind, orographic flow, thermodynamic structure are compared with the radar, radiosounding observations.

Conclusion • The additional MAP observations, high resolution upper air soundings, aircraft,european dropsondes, have significant influence on the simulation. • The impact of the windprofile is strong. • MAP-reanalysis doesn‘t provide always the best simulation • The after QC denied windprofiles have remarkable impact on the simulation. Sometimes it is very positive.
