  2. E-debate Arguments • We have failed on WASH in Schools (highest hits) • WASH in Schools has failed in setting standards and monitoring coverage  • We don’t need more evidence for WASH in Schools • We are sharing enough of our WASH in schools information (lowest hits) • Follow up??? - running until 31 May Presentation Title

  3. E-debate - selected arguments(note we have the summary overviews from each of the e-debate points for those interested) We have failed on WASH in Schools • No buy- in from the private sector • No focus on consistent monitoring • High level advocacy fails to address governments on their un-coordinated actions • No global overview such as JMP available for WinS But: we are now at a stage where we recognize the problem(s) and we are acting on it Presentation Title

  4. E-debate - selected arguments WASH in Schools has failed in setting standards and monitoring coverage • Guidelines and standards available • Could improve on standards for low-cost settings • Need to strengthen relationships with national/local leaders • Good examples from India and Bangladesh Presentation Title

  5. E-debate - selected arguments We don’t need more evidence for WASH in Schools • Every school should have WASH facilities whether they have an impact on learning outcomes or not • Stop making claims on impacts that cannot yet be proven (e.g. girls attendance and drop-out) and focus on what can be proven (e.g. increased knowledge on hygiene) • We do ...it influences policy makers Presentation Title

  6. E-debate - selected arguments We are sharing enough of our WASH in schools information • More than enough: from formal meetings to informal Google groups and web sites • We can do a lot better: technical design manuals, examples of National Plans of Action – where to find? • What you share and who you share with is important Presentation Title

  7. What do we learn from this? “Solving school WASH is not as simple as giving out a mosquito net or a Vitamin A tablet which are now being done at scale. But as a sector we have to start thinking bigger... “ (participant E-debate) Presentation Title

  8. What do we learn from setting up this e-debate form? • That this does provide an international platform that allows anyone interested in WASH in schools (whom may not have been able to attend this meeting) to react. Clearly the e-debate has shown that there is much interest in WASH in schools especially concerning how to make this subsector work better • This e-debate platform with the success of this meeting, could be used e.g. for the next follow up WASH in schools meeting • Any other points from colleagues?
