  2. Impact of the New Deal • By 1937 the economy began to stablize and people were hopeful that the Depression was over. • FDR scaled back New Deal Programs • Result: A recession in 1938

  3. Did the New Deal End the Depression? • No • It relieved some of the worse stresses of the Depression • Greatest Accomplishment – It bought time!

  4. Did the New Deal Save Capitalism? • Yes • By the end of 1932, old capitalism was in trouble • 1938-1939 We still had capitalism, but it is different • More Government Regulation • Federal Welfare Programs • Greater expectation of government involvement in the economy

  5. FDR Creates the Modern Presidency • FDR greatly expanded the legislative functions and the roll of the President in the Federal Government. • Sets the standard for future Presidents to follow.
