  1. Remote Sensing of Battlespace Parameters Theme Leader: Stan Kidder

  2. Remote Sensing of Battlespace Parameters • Objective • Use remote sensing methods to characterize the Battlespace(~1000 km  1000 km)

  3. Annual Program Plan Projects Meteosat Second Generation (MSG, now Meteosat 8) Product Development (6.2) Thin Cirrus Detection (6.2) Satellite Microwave Water Vapor Profiling (6.2) Microwave Land Emissivity over Complex Terrain (6.2) Cloud Classification and Cloud-Base Height Estimation Using Neural Networks (6.2) A Prototype Boundary Layer Forecast Model - Applications to Fog; Evaluation and Testing of Physics Algorithms (6.2) Analysis of Nonlinear/Linear, Hydrostatic/Non-Hydrostatic High-Resolution RAMS Simulation Coupling Numerical with Physical Models (6.2)

  4. MSG Product Development • The MSG data are being acquired in real time. • It is now possible to make many products of interest to the DoD.

  5. Thin Cirrus Detection • Cirrus is… • Poster: “Cirrus Detection Using MSG Data”—Stan Kidder

  6. Satellite Microwave Water Vapor Profiling • Over land…. • Poster: “Water Vapor Profile Retrievals From Satellite Microwave Sounding Instruments”—John Forsythe

  7. Microwave Land Emissivity over Complex Terrain • Dissertation completed • Student (Ben Ruston) graduated • Tech Transition: Ben now employed at NRL Monterey doing related work and preparing journal papers from the dissertation.

  8. Cloud/Aerosol Classification Using Neural Networks • Two posters: • “Coherent-Based Feature Extraction for Cloud Analysis using Satellite Imagery Data”—Amanda Falcone • “Dust aerosol optical properties retrieval over Middle-East with Meteosat-8”—Vincent Wong (presented by Stan Kidder)

  9. A Prototype Boundary Layer Forecast Model • Presentation and Poster: “Battlefield Environment Boundary Layer Forecasting including Aerosol Forecasting”—Bill Cotton

  10. Analysis of Nonlinear/Linear, Hydrostatic/Non-Hydrostatic High-Resolution RAMS Simulation Coupling Numerical with Physical Models • Presentation: “Derivation of Battlespace Parameters”—Roger Pielke

  11. New Task • Requested by ARL at Jan 2003 Annual CG/AR Review • Poster: “Fast Methods for Acoustic Transmission Loss Prediction”—Gordon Wichern & Mahmood Azimi

  12. Summary • Progress made on all Battlespace projects • New acoustic transmission project added in response to ARL request • Cloud base estimation methods on hold until data from CloudSat becomes available (mid-2005). • Ruston microwave surface emissivity work incorporated into water vapor profile and soil moisture studies.
