  3. The 1960’s • Martin attended Marist High School. • During this time, he collected Silver Age comic books. Comic books introduced him to the superhero genre. • In 1965, he won an Alley Award for Best Fan Fiction for his short story Powerman versus the Blue Barrier. The first of many awards he would win for his work in fiction.

The story revolves around several noble families fighting for the throne of Westeros. The society is patriarchal and polytheistic. • Martin was inspired by fantasy writers such as J.R.R. Tolkien, medieval history, and the Wars of the Roses. • The books in the series; A Game of Thrones, A Clash of Kings, A Storm of Swords, A Feast for Crows, A Dance with Dragons, and the forthcoming volumes; TheWinds of Winterand A Dream of Spring.

Season 2 of the series will premiere on April 1, 2012. • The series received praise from critics, viewers, and fans of the books. Of thirteen Emmy Award nominations, it won for Best Supporting Actor and Best Main Title Design. • HBO produced the series because the series would stay true to the book series and HBO could keep all the sex, violence, and language depicted in the books.

  8. Why I Chose George R.R. Martin • I chose George R.R. Martin for a few reasons: • 1. I want to be a writer, and he is a real inspiration. He wrote short stories, novels, and wrote for television. He made a career doing what he loves, writing. • 2. 2011 was the year his A Song of Ice and Fire series was turned into an acclaimed and Emmy-winning television series. • 3. I saw him live (along with other writers) at Page 1 Bookstore in the summer. Martin is smart, funny, and he gave me important writing advice (read and write often). • That is why I named George R.R. Martin as My Person of the Year 2011.
