  1. THE EUROPEAN SPACE AGENCY UNITED SPACE IN EUROPE

  2. ESA facts and figures • Over 50 years of experience • 22 Member States • Eight sites/facilities in Europe, about 2300 staff • 5.75 billion Euro budget (2017) • Over 80 satellites designed, tested and operated in flight

  3. Purpose of ESA “To provide for and promote, for exclusively peaceful purposes, cooperation among European states in space research and technology and their space applications.” Article 2 of ESA Convention

  4. Member States ESA has 22 Member States: 20 states of the EU (AT, BE, CZ, DE, DK, EE, ES, FI, FR, IT, GR, HU, IE, LU, NL, PT, PL, RO, SE, UK) plus Norway and Switzerland. Seven other EU states have Cooperation Agreements with ESA: Bulgaria, Cyprus, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta and Slovakia. Discussions are ongoing with Croatia. Slovenia is an Associate Member. Canada takes part in some programmes under a long-standing Cooperation Agreement.

  5. Activities • ESA is one of the few space agencies in the world to combine responsibility in nearly all areas of space activity. human spaceflight space science exploration earth observation navigation launchers * Space science is a Mandatory programme, all Member States contribute to it according to GNP. All other programmes are Optional, funded ‘a la carte’ by Participating States. operations technology telecommunications

  6. ESA’s locations Salmijaervi (Kiruna) Moscow Brussels ESTEC (Noordwijk) ECSAT (Harwell) EAC (Cologne) Washington Maspalomas ESOC (Darmstadt) ESA HQ (Paris) Houston Oberpfaffenhofen Santa Maria Kourou Toulouse ESA sites ESA sites + ESA Ground Station ESA Ground Station + Offices ESA Ground Station New Norcia Perth Offices Redu Malargüe ESAC (Madrid) ESRIN (Rome) Cebreros

  8. ESA’s industrial policy About 85% of ESA’s budget is spent on contracts with European industry. ESA’s industrial policy: • Ensures that Member States get a fair return on their investment; • Improves competitiveness of European industry; • Maintains and develops space technology; • Exploits the advantages of free competitive bidding, except where incompatible with objectives of the industrial policy.

  9. Science payload technology validation section • ESTEC (Noordwijk, NL) / Science directorate / Future missions office • ~ 20 people • 1 laboratory and mechanics workshop:focused on payload/instrumentation aspects, mainly detectors and readout electronics • 5 detector characterization benches:2 Near-IR (Euclid, generic), 3 Visible (Gaia, generic, PLATO) • In support to Science missions from study to operation phase, we perform: • Performance specific studies (often related to radiation effects on detectors) • Technology validation, i.e. cross-validation of measurements performed in the industry, by scientific consortia • Generic technology development

  10. ESA’s contribution to ESI2017 • Space instrumentation overview • Technology Developments for ESA Science Missions with a focus on detectors • Space environment effects on ESA Science Missions • Highlight topic Gravitational Wave: • "LISA Pathfinder: technology demonstration for key components successfully concluded in-orbit over the last year”McNamara, Paul - LISA Pathfinder study scientist   • “LISA: Activities conducted for the preparation of the future space based gravitational wave detection system Laser Interferometer Space Array”Jennrich, Oliver - LISA study scientist
