  1. SCC University What we believe and why we believe it!

  2. Study Tactics – Quick Review • 3 Basics Stages • Observation • Interpretation • Application

  3. Meaning • What is meaning and who controls it – the author or the reader? • A person is free to read a book however they want • The author only has control so far as the reader allows. • Circumstances will control the way a reader interprets a text - Mindset • Personal Communications: Because of the nature of the text we want to know “all” the author is trying to say to us. • Ex. A person will read a love letter in a manner that tries to FULLY assess the author’s intent. • “HOW MUCH do they love me?”

  4. Meaning • What is meaning and who controls it – the author or the reader? • Circumstances will control the way a reader interprets a text – Mindset • General Literature: casual assessment of meaning OR create our own meaningas befits our circumstance • “Old Man and the Sea” • Maybe we see ourselves as the old man? Or we envision our lives like the fish? • “With a Little Help from my Friends” • Fun song with a catchy tune that’s about drugs, so for some of us we may ignore intended meaning and add our own!

  5. Meaning • What is meaning and who controls it – the author or the reader? • In many circumstances, however, it is important we search for the author’s meaning. • Electric Bill – say you decide to interpret a billing statement that says you owe $105 dollars to really “mean” that you only owe $50 dollars and so that is what you pay. Continue this way and pretty soon you will not be able to read at all because you are going to be in the dark. • The same is true of the Bible – there is a danger treating it to loosely and only searching for meaning as it applies to us. “what does it mean to me?”

  6. Meaning • What is meaning and who controls it – the author or the reader? • How do we guard against improperly interpreting the Bible? • Proper interpretation begins asking the right question (sets your mindset). • What is the meaning God/author intended in this text? • Meaning: timeless truth applicable to all Christians • Application: subject response by the reader to the meaning of the text as it applies to specific life situations • 2 Peter 3:18 - But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

  7. 2 Peter • Sections of 2 Peter: • Theme: The truth of the gospels is a foundation that stands against false teachers and prophecy • Mission: 1:12 Therefore, I intend always to remind you (of v3-11)… amplified by v14 • Greetings: 1:1,2 • 1) Truth of the Gospel 1:3-21 • A) Spiritual growth in the life of a believer as confirmation of election B) Peter’s Mission, C) Truth of the gospel attested by Apostolic and Prophetic testimony • 2) Warning about false teachers & prediction about their final judgement: 2:1-22 • 3) Second coming of Christ: 3:1-18a

  8. 2 Peter • 1) Truth of the Gospel: 1:3-21 • v3-11: Spiritual growth in the life of a believer as confirmation of election • 10Therefore, brothers, be all the more diligent to confirm your calling and election, for if you practice these qualities you will never fall. 11 For in this way there will be richly provided for you an entrance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. • Does this mean the elect can “fall” from salvation? • No – truly elect are maintained. What Peter is saying is that “ASSURANCE (and/or peace) and DISOBEDIENCEdo not sleep in the same bed.” – AlisterBegg • 1 Cor. 3:10-15: Do we want to enter heaven and have to explain to Jesus how shamefully we regarded his suffering?

  9. 2 Peter • Sections of 2 Peter: • Theme: The truth of the gospels is a foundation that stands against false teachers and prophecy • Mission: 1:12 Therefore, I intend always to remind you (of v3-11)… amplified by v14 • Greetings: 1:1,2 • 1) Truth of the Gospel 1:3-21 • A) Spiritual growth in the life of a believer as confirmation of election B) Peter’s Mission, C) Truth of the gospel attested by Apostolic and Prophetic testimony (v16-21) • 2) Warning about false teachers & prediction about their final judgement: 2:1-22 • 3) Second coming of Christ: 3:1-18a

  10. 2 Peter • 1) Truth of the Gospel: 1:3-21 • V16-21: Truth of the gospel attested by Apostolic and Prophetic testimony • 16 For we did not follow cleverly devised myths when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty. 17 For when he received honor and glory from God the Father, and the voice was borne to him by the Majestic Glory, “This is my beloved Son,with whom I am well pleased,” 18 we ourselves heard this very voice borne from heaven, for we were with him on the holy mountain. 19 And we have the prophetic word more fully confirmed, to which you will do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts, 20 knowing this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture comes from someone's own interpretation. 21 For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.

  11. 2 Peter • 1) Truth of the Gospel: 1:3-21 • V16-21: Truth of the gospel attested by Apostolic and Prophetic testimony • 2 Tim. 3:16 • Presence as scripture is the result of God’s will • Eph. 2:20 • Apostles, prophets, and Christ = 3 unique and unrepeatable positions that the Church is founded on. • 2 Pet. 1:16-21 • Eye witness account to the O.T. prophecies cross-validates New. & O.T. scriptures. • Rev. 22:18-19 • Stern warning that they are not to be added to.

  12. 2 Peter • Sections of 2 Peter: • Theme: The truth of the gospels is a foundation that stands against false teachers and prophecy • 1) Truth of the Gospel 1:3-21 • 2) Warning about false teachers & prediction about their final judgement: 2:1-22 • A) Their presence and conduct described (v1-3), B) Their certain judgement pronounced (v3b-11), and C) Their immoral ways denounced • 3) Second coming of Christ: 3:1-18a

  13. 2 Peter • Sections of 2 Peter: • 2) Warning about false teachers & prediction about their final judgement: 2:1-22 • A) certainty of their coming and their conduct (2:1-3a) • 2:1But false prophets also arose among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, bringing upon themselves swift destruction. 2 And many will follow their sensuality, and because of them the way of truth will be blasphemed. 3aAnd in their greed they will exploit you with false words.

  14. 2 Peter • Sections of 2 Peter: • 2) Warning about false teachers & prediction about their final judgement: 2:1-22 • B) Their certain judgement pronounced (2:3b-11) • 2:3bTheir condemnation from long ago is not idle, and their destruction is not asleep. 4 For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but cast them into helland committed them to chainsof gloomy darkness to be kept until the judgment; 5 if he did not spare the ancient world, but preserved Noah, a herald of righteousness, with seven others, when he brought a flood upon the world of the ungodly; 6 if by turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah to ashes he condemned them to extinction, making them an example of what is going to happen to the ungodly;7 and if he rescued righteous Lot, greatly distressed by the sensual conduct of the wicked 8 (for as that righteous man lived among them day after day, he was tormenting his righteous soul over their lawless deeds that he saw and heard); 9 then the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from trials, and to keep the unrighteous under punishment until the day of judgment…..

  15. 2 Peter • Sections of 2 Peter: • 2) Warning about false teachers & prediction about their final judgement: 2:1-22 • B) Their certain judgement pronounced (2:3b-11) • Notice the presence of 3 examples of judgement • 1) Angles, 2) Ancient World, & 3) Sodom and Gomorrah • Certainty of God’s coming judgement • False teachers will ignore the reality of punishment for sin • Noah & Lot = importance of righteousness in line with God’s free gift of grace • “With the selfsame winds that blow. Tis the set of the sails and not the gales, that tell us the way to go.” – Ella Wheeler Wilcox

  16. 2 Peter • Sections of 2 Peter: • 2) Warning about false teachers & prediction about their final judgement: 2:1-22 • B) Their certain judgement pronounced (2:3b-11) • 2:10and especially those who indulge in the lust of defiling passion and despise authority. Bold and willful, they do not tremble as they blaspheme the glorious ones, 11whereas angels, though greater in might and power, do not pronounce a blasphemous judgment against them before the Lord.

  17. 2 Peter • Sections of 2 Peter: • 2) Warning about false teachers & prediction about their final judgement: 2:1-22 • B) Their certain judgement pronounced (2:3b-11) • “glorious ones,” “angels,” “judgement” • Jude 10,11 – The reference to the Devil along side “glorious ones” leads us to assume they are fallen angels • Importance? These false teachers who “despise authority” are ignoring the reality of evil’s presence • There’s no judgement, there’s no devil, so there’s no problem living their life of sin

  18. 2 Peter • Sections of 2 Peter: • 2) Warning about false teachers & prediction about their final judgement: 2:1-22 • C) Their immoral ways denounced (2:12-22) • 2:12 But these, like natural brute beasts made to be caught and destroyed, speak evil of the things they do not understand, and will utterly perish in their own corruption…20 For if, after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in them and overcome, the latter end is worse for them than the beginning….22 …  “A dog returns to his own vomit,”

  19. 2 Peter • Sections of 2 Peter: • Theme: The truth of the gospels is a foundation that stands against false teachers and prophecy • 1) Truth of the Gospel 1:3-21 • 2) Warning about false teachers & prediction about their final judgement: 2:1-22 • 3) Second coming of Christ: 3:1-18a • The certainty of judgement as a basis for standing firm against false teaching.
