Maryland Drivers Reporting Drinking and Driving Drops Nearly 50% Since 2004
A recent survey reveals that the percentage of Maryland drivers reporting drinking and driving has decreased by 46% since 2004, dropping from 14% to 7.3% in 2008 and remaining stable through 2009. Despite this decline, almost 35% of surveyed drivers still believe they are unlikely to be stopped by police after drinking. The author emphasizes the importance of increased media attention and high visibility enforcement, including sobriety checkpoints, to further reduce these rates. The data is derived from a statewide telephone survey conducted by the University of Maryland.
