  1. The Origin of Earth Theory

  2. Big Bang Theory • Universe is expanding from a concentrated point in time • Approximately 15 Billion Years Ago (BYA) • Universe started hot with lots of energy • As it cooled created atoms, mainly Hydrogen (H)

  3. Galaxies • Galaxy is a rotating aggregation of stars, dust, gas, & debris • Approximately 50 Billion galaxies with approximately 50 Billion stars in each • Ex: Milky Way

  4. Stars • Stars are spheres of illuminating gas & debris • Closest star is 42 trillion km away

  5. Solar System • Our solar system consists of the sun and its family of planets • The sun is a star • My Very Excited Mother Just Served Us Nine Pizzas • Although Pluto is now considered a Planetesical

  6. Lives of Stars • Stars live in stages • Condensation Theory explains how stars and planets form created from the evidence of the stages of star lives

  7. Nebula • Stars form in nebulae (cold clouds of dust & gas) • Nebula shrinks due to weak gravitational pull • Gasses condense forms a Protostar

  8. Protostar • Continues to condense & shrink • Temperature increases • Hydrogen atoms fuse and forms Helium • Releases LOTS of energy that escapes as light

  9. Star • Fusion of Hydrogen is stable • Not shrinking nor expanding • Small size = long life • Example: our star • Large size = short life

  10. Red Giant • Hydrogen fusion converts into heavier elements like Carbon & Oxygen • Increase in Energy (brighter) • Size Increases • Light Pulsates • Carbon & Oxygen gets trapped at core of Red Giant

  11. Supernova • Core of Red Giant collapses due to depletion of Hydrogen • Internal Temperature increases • Falls in on itself with an increase in energy causes a sudden explosion (10 secs) • Elements are sprayed into space

  12. Formation of Solar System • Solar Nebula hit by supernove explosion • Spread elements into our system • Caused gases in our nebula to spin • Approximately 5 BYA

  13. Spin allowed materials to condense at the center • Created Protosun & Planets • Protosun became Sun when temperature increased enough to fuse Hydrogen atoms

  14. Planets • Small bodies that orbit a star but emit no light • Planets formed by accretion – clumping of small particles into large masses • Evidence: heavier metals found in planets closer to the sun & gases further from the sun
