  2. The recording of measurements was first created during the early civilizations of Egypt and Mesopotamia. In Egypt, the Indus Valley Civilization’s measurements were extremely accurate.

  3. Early records show that men first measured length by their arm or finger, measured time using the sun and moon, and measured volume of an object by filling that object with a certain amount of plant seeds.

  4. During the time of the Roman Empire, it is said that a foot was based on the length of a human foot. Legends state that it was based on an actual measurement of Hercules’ foot.

  5. The Metric System • The metric system was created by the French Academy of Sciences in 1790 during the French Revolution. The National Assembly of France demanded them to “deduce an invariable standard for all the measures and all the weights.”

  6. The Treaty of the Meter • The Treaty of the Meter is a treaty that created three groups to manage metric standards. These organizations are called the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM), General Conference on Weights and Measures (CGPM), and International Committee for Weights and Measures (CIPM)

  7. The Treaty of the Meter (also known as Metre Convention) was signed in 1875. The system of units instituted in the treaty was later named the International System of Units (SI).

  8. The length of a standard meter was defined by the dimensions of the planet earth by the French Academy of Sciences.

  9. The meter was later redefined as “the length of the path travelled by light in vacuum during a time interval of 1/299,792,458 of a second”

  10. The Metric Act of 1866 • The Metric Act of 1866 was significant because it was recognized as a system of measurement in the United States.

  11. Early tools of measurement • foot (length of your foot) • cubit (length of your forearm) • yard • seeds (for measuring volume) • stones (for measuring weight or height )
