  2. According to archeological records, which civilizations were the first to record measurements? • The first people to record measurements were the Egyptians; they used levels and sundials.

  3. Around the time of the Roman Empire the terms inch, foot, and yard were refined. What was the length of a foot based on? • The foot as a measure was used in almost all Western cultures and was usually divided into 12 or sometimes 10 inches/thumbs.

  4. For what reason did the French Academy of Science create the metric system? • Under the Bishop of Autun, the French Academy appointed several committees to carry out the work of developing a usable system of weights and measures for France.

  5. What was Treaty of the Meter (May 20, 1875)? • The Treaty of the Meter was signed on May 20th 1885 by twenty countries, including the United States, at the International Metric Convention to set the standard on weights and measures.

  6. How was the length of a standard meter defined in the year 1791? • The meter was intended to be one ten millionth part of a quadrant of the earth through Paris, (an arc from the pole to the equator).

  7. How was the length of the standard meter redefined in the year 1983? • The distance light travels in a vacuum.

  8. What was the significance of the Metric Act of 1866? • It legally recognized the metric system in the United States. The only people that use the Metric System are the ones highlighted in red.

  9. What were some of the early tools to help aid in measurement? • Early people used the body and their natural surroundings to help aid them in measurement.

  10. What major engineering blunders were results of faulty measurement? • The mars observer mission, the Hubble Space Telescope, and the Tacoma Narrows Bridge.
