  2. Project 6 For your final project in American Studies English, you will use your individual power to make a social impact. Research a topic or cause that is close to your heart, and get ready to make a change!

  3. Research your topic/ cause • A brief history of your cause in this country • Its current state • Aproposal or call to action of what should happen next • The importance and relevance of your cause • Works cited page

  4. Persuasive Speech • Write and deliver a speech using • Ethos • Logos • Pathos • Public Speaking Skills to persuade your audience • Be sure to include your volunteer experience

  5. Community service with reflection paper • Perform some sort of community service associated with the topic you have chosen. • You must have proof of service • 3-5 hours or service or one day outing/event • Response should include: • Background (i.e. why you chose this topic, your expectations of what the experience would be like, any other background or connections you may have had prior to this project) • Factual details (i.e. name and location of the organization, dates of your service, job duties) • Impact (i.e. whether your expectations were met, your feelings about the experience, what surprised you or contradicted your previous opinions)

  6. Possible topics and volunteer ideas: • Homelessness - shelter, food bank • Environmental preservation/marine pollution/species - beach/water clean-up, parks • Civil rights (gay, women, race, religion) - volunteer with campaign, organization • Hunger/Poverty • Animal neglect/cruelty • Youth services (bullying, foster care, suicide prevention/awareness, mental health) • Special needs (autism, learning disabled, physically disabled) • Health issues (obesity, diseases, and eating disorders) • Addiction (drug, alcohol, gambling etc) • Societal neglect (elderly, war veterans)

  7. Due Dates • Community service and reflection paper due: Wednesday June 5th • Written speech due: Tuesday June 11th • Presentation of speeches: Tuesday June 11th-13th
