  1. Who Are American Citizens? • US Constitution states two ways: • By Birth • Naturalization: for people not born in the US this is the legal way to become a citizen **Some residents of the US are not citizens

  3. Automatic Citizen By Birth • Born in a state or the District of Columbia • Born in an American territory • Born on US military base overseas • Born to an American citizen who lived in US

  4. AutomaticCitizen By Birth • If your parents are both citizens OR one parent is a citizen who has lived in the US • Children born on American soil to non-US citizens acquire citizenship except foreign diplomats

Citizenship • Only federal gov. can grant citizenship & take it away • State gov. can deny a convicted criminal of certain privileges (voting) • Citizens can lose citizenship in 3 ways: • Denaturalization: fraud & deception • Expatriation: leaving one’s native country to live in a foreign country • Being convicted of certain crimes: treason, rebellion, violent revolutions **Native-born US citizens can only lose citizenship through their own actions & cannot be denaturalized

  6. Aliens in America • Immigrants--people who move permanently to a new country • 675,000 accepted each year • Mostly relatives of US citizens or people with needed job skills (Immigration Act of 1990)

  7. Types of Legal Aliens • Non Resident Alien: expects to stay in US for a short, specified period • Resident Alien: from foreign country & established permanent residence in the US • Stay as long as they with w/o becoming an American citizen

  8. Legal Aliens in America • Own property & attend school • Pay taxes and hold jobs • DO NOT have full political rights • MAY NOT vote, run for office, or work in most government jobs • Must carry ID cards • Entitled to legal protection

  9. Illegal Aliens in America • Many live in the US illegally • Laws forbid hiring illegal aliens • Many live in fear that the government will deport them

Naturalization Process • Step 1: Immigrant signs a Declaration of Intention • Step 2: Declaration is filed with USCIS • Step 3: the Immigrant files an application for citizenship after living in US for 5 years • Step 4: USCIS interviews the applicant • Step 5: The applicant passes a citizenship exam • Step 6: USCIS grants the application & the applicant pledges an oath of allegiance • **USCIS=US Citizenship & Immigration Services
